Is there a way to force the Paperwhite to use 3G rather than wifi when in range of a wifi network?

Don't sign in to the WiFi?

Are you aware that you can only go to Amazon, Wiki and the translation function using 3G?

@Mike: It doesn't seem like the Paperwhite will connect to 3G even if I don't sign in to wifi. There was a workaround with the keyboard models but I can't figure out a way to make it work with the Paperwhite.

@M. Francis: Yes. All I want to do is download a book when I'm traveling and don't have access to/don't want to pay for protected wifi networks.

I don't understand. My PW is automatically on WiFi at home or where else I might have signed in, like my sons' homes. But, when I am out and about, it goes right to 3G -- nothing I have to do.

That's likely because you're not in range of a wifi network. When no wifi networks are available, it defaults to 3G. Where there are networks in range, however, it waits for you to connect to a wifi network and I can't find a way to bypass wifi in favor of 3G.

P.S. and, I had the keyboard model also. Same thing: it would default to my WiFi, but when I was out and about, it went right to 3G -- no workaround required.

Sorry, never experienced that.

Just hit cancel in the screen where you pick the wifi network and wait a while:

turn on the wireless and wait - it will default to 3G after a while

however, if you hit sync or click on a book to download it, my experience is that it will always look for a wifi connection even if it's never connected via wifi before (I have never used mine with wifi)

My Paperwhite won't connect to 3G regardless of how long I wait. It's helpful to know that's how it works for other people -- thanks, all! I think I'll give customer support a call.

Brykasema says:
Is it 3G capable not just the wifi model. How much did you pay for it?

Brykasema, you're responding to messages that were posted 6 months ago, and it's not clear who you're asking. You can look at the prices of the 3G and WiFi only models by going to the product page on amazon.com here: Kindle Paperwhite 3G, 6" High Resolution Display with Built-in Light, Free 3G + Wi-Fi - Includes Special Offers [Previous Generation]

In the future, click on the "reply to this post" link at the bottom of the page when you want to ask someone a question, that way they'll know it's directed to them.
