My new kindle (5 months old) screen is stuck with random lines and some words from the book I was last reading. I tried the 20 second switch reset but nothing changed.
Any ideas on how to do a system reset?
Thanks

Sam

I don't know, but my Kindle is stuck on one of my collections. I can't select anything, and I can't go 'home' or do anything but stare at a few lines of text and unclickable links about this collection. I've hooked it up to the laptop, turned it on and off, and nothing.

Sam: If you did the 20 second reset and it did acutally reset but nothing changed, it's time to call customer service. If it didn't reset at all, try 30 seconds!

Deputy Headmistress: Hold the power switch for 30 seconds, and then let it start up again. It takes about 5 minutes.

My kindle Fire froze, then wouldn't turn on. I held the power button for 30 seconds and it reset good as new.

I'm having problems with this as well. I've had mine since December and it wont do anything.

Is it a fire? If not, telling us which eink model will give you a better shot at a helpful answer.

BTW: I did check to see if who you replied to would give me a hint but that post didn't mention which kindle either.

My kindle is doing this too. No warning, no apparent reason, the 20sec reset didn't work. I am so pissed.

Last time. What kindle model(s) are you talking about?

No wonder no one's helping. :-/

I have the 2nd generation Kindle with a keyboard. I've had it since May 2011. Last night when I went to use it for the first time in awhile, it said the battery needed to be charged. So I plugged it in and went to bed. Today, the screen is stuck on my list of books and the 20 (and 30 second) reset is not doing anything for me. It still has the "charging" icon displayed in the top right corner even when it's not plugged in. And when it is, there is no light indicator that it is charging. Help? :(

I would try one more hard reset. Remember, your k2 should not be attached to the charging cord when you reset it. Try holding the power button for longer than 30 seconds. It won't hurt to try.

Once or twice, my kindles have required more than one hard reset in a row to resolve the freeze.

If that doesn't work, I would contact AKCS. They may be able to talk you through to a resolution or access your device themselves to restore and unfreeze it.

They're quite easy to reach. (Just in case your unsure how to reach them) Contact them by going to "Help" and clicking on the "Contact Us" button midway down the right side of your browser window.

Thanks very much for the reply. I did try multiple resets and had no success. So I called amazon and they are sending me a new one. :)

To reset a 1st gen, take the back off and you will see a small hole titled "reset"--stick the end of a paperclip in and pull out. The kindle will reset in a few minutes. I do this without being plugged into charger. I've had my 1st gen for about 4 years and have had to reset it numerous times as it freezes. I have about 1200 books on it (with extra memory chip). Lyn

Same here, I have all lines over my kindle along with the home screen picture of a random author. Do you know how to fix it now? I tried holding the reset button for 20 seconds, but still nothing is happening. Someone please help me!!!

It finally reset. I read all the posts and was quite frustrated I never found a "model number" or version ID anywhere on the box/guide to describe "version". Initially it was unresponsive to any key other than cursor. After the third or 4th time I held the power key "on" - for more than many seconds - I finally have a reset. Further info: at least a time or two during the attempts, I noticed the green LED would initially come on then go off, even blink 3 times, then nothing.
I am so thrilled to have a menu back.
Now if someone would just update the browser or download library tools I wouldn't have to threaten the cute little thing so often.
