Also don't forget to nominate a few good freebies for the next discussion:

A few more Charles Dickens' quotes:

It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to, than I have ever known.

Accidents will occur in the best regulated families.

I do not know the American gentleman, god forgive me for putting two such words together.

Train up a fig tree in the way it should go, and when you are old sit under the shade of it.

We need never be ashamed of our tears.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to heaven, we were all going direct the other way - in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.

Website to watch NBC video of the Olympics:

The 2014 Olympic Winter Games will be the first time that the Russian Federation will have hosted the Winter Games; the Soviet Union hosted the 1980 Summer Games in Moscow. The host city Sochi has a population of 400,000 people and is situated in Krasnodar, which is the third largest region in Russia.
The Games will be organized in two clusters: a coastal cluster for ice events in Sochi, and a mountain cluster located in the Krasnaya Polyana Mountains. This will make it one of the most compact Games ever, with around 30 minutes travel time from the coastal to mountain cluster.

The Sochi Olympic Park will be built along the Black Sea coast in the Imeretinskaya Valley, where all the ice venues such as the Bolshoi Ice Palace, the Maly Ice Palace, the Olympic Oval, the Sochi Olympic Skating Centre, the Olympic Curling Centre, the Central Stadium, the Main Olympic Village and the International Broadcast Centre and Main Press Centre, will be built anew for the 2014 Games. The Park will ensure a very compact concept with an average distance of 6km between the Olympic Village and the other coastal venues.
The mountain cluster in Krasnaya Polyana will be home to all the skiing and sliding sports. The mountain concept is again a very compact one with only an average distance of 4km between the mountain sub-village and the venues. There will also be a sub-media centre in the mountain cluster.

The ceremonies will be the most impressive and memorable events of the Olympic Games. The involvement of the best athletes and the most talented artists, and the support of spectators will create a truly unforgettable show.

There are three kinds of Ceremonies which are open to spectators and broadcast to billions of television viewers all over the world: the Opening Ceremony, the Closing Ceremony and Victory Ceremonies.

The Ceremonies will create an unforgettable impression both on their participants and the spectators.

The Opening Ceremony marks the start of the Games and presents the athletes.

Victory Ceremonies will be held after each medal event to honor the medal winners.

The Closing Ceremony concludes the Games, recalling the highlights and reviewing the sports events.

On 29 September 2013 the Olympic Flame was lit in Olympia, Greece, the birthplace of the ancient Olympic Games.

Traditionally, the Olympic Torch Relay commences in Ancient Olympia, Greece, where, historically, the Olympic Flame was lit on the eve of the ancient Olympic Games.

As part of the Ceremony, a theatrical performance took place in the ruins of the ancient Temple of Hera. During the performance, priestesses asked the Gods for permission to light the flame.

The Olympic Torch is always lit using the sun's rays, reflected on a large parabolic mirror which is used to symbolize the approval of the Gods to host the Olympic Games. If the weather is cloudy, the Flame is lit using the Flame obtained during the Ceremony rehearsal conducted the day before.

The renowned Greek actress, Ino Menegaki, the third time played the role of the High Priestess and asked the Greek God Apollo to send the sun's rays to earth to light the Flame, and Zeus to crown the winners of the Games with laurel wreaths. The Priestess then lit the Olympic torch from the sun's rays and passed the torch, and an olive branch signifying peace, to the first Relay torchbearer, the Greek alpine skier Giannis Antoniou. The Olympic Flame then was passed to one of the most celebrated Russian athletes, the ice hockey player Alexander Ovechkin. He became the first Russian torchbearer of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Torch Relay.

On February 7th billions of people all over the world will be able to witness an exciting show - the XXII Olympic Games Opening Ceremony.

KaJoLa, I loved, loved your start. Thank you so much.

I had to think twice about which book "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times" came from, it was so very familiar and then the penny dropped. the Tale of Two Cities.

I enjoy Dickens, but confess to finding it quite hard going. I have Bleak House on my kindle and really want to read it again, but ......

Garth Brooks......I love!

Now the Olympics....I am really looking forward to watching as much as I can of all the events. I watched a little of the snow boarding last night and found it incredible.

There a a few events that I don't know what they are, Luge, Curling, Nordic combined and Skeleton, but I'm sure I will find out what they are during the next couple of weeks.

I am really looking forward to the Opening Ceremony which is at 6:00 p.m. SAST so the ideal time for me.

I meant to say how I loved your art. Superb!

Also to say that I loved the explanation of the lighting of the Olympic torch, I didn't know how it was lit and found it very interesting. I love tradition ... I'm a softy, and it actually makes me quite emotional to think that traditions like that have been going for so long.

Thank you for the start KaJoLa. I'd love to attend the Olympics, but I will settle for staying cozy and warm and watch from my living room.
Sally, I can't wait to see what you think of Skeleton!

Donna, you are making me very curious!

Perhaps I should Google those events that I know nothing about .. or should I wait for someone here to enlighten me.....or just wait for the event? This is like not knowing what book to read next, decisions, decisions!

Please come and make your nominations....

To me Skeleton reminds me of toboganning head first. Luge is toboganning feet first. The speeds that they get up to are amazing, and very scary for those of us like me who are not even coordinated enough for fast video games, never mind physical sports...

Sally in SA says:
Which makes me ask, do you ski? I'm sure anyone living in a place with so much snow has to be very proficient.

The snow boarding was scary enough for me. Those jumps and how they manage to stay on their feet .. incredible. Can't wait to watch the other events.

This is the skiing conversation that occurred when I went on a couple's ski trip with some work friends years ago.
"Hey, where's Donna?"
"Oh, did you see the giant cloud of snow going down the mountain? That was Donna."
I had snow down every possible slight opening of any clothing I had on. After that, my husband took pity on me and skied with me on easier slopes. After lunch I decided that even he was too difficult to ski with for my limited ski knowledge, so I found some lovely 4 year old children and followed them down the easy trails as they seemed to know the best way down.
After that, when my knees started protesting from my constant snowplow action, I decided that the chalet was more my speed. I am built for spectator sports!

Your skiing experiences reminded me of someone ..... oh yes, now I know they are like mine, I have to say that I have the attitude to skiing of 'been there done that' and like you I am also best suited to spectator sports if any at all :-)

Excellent. We will be good chalet buddies, wait for everyone else to finish skiing, and then go out to dinner and let others re live their glorious accomplishments. Hot chocolate with Bailey's for us!

Sounds exactly right to me ...... but I thought that you were buying an island in the sun for us all to visit :-D

In reply to an earlier post on Feb 6, 2014 10:25:00 PM PST
That's true, but if we have to visit friends who are skiing we need a plan, don't we?

In reply to an earlier post on Feb 6, 2014 10:44:44 PM PST
Won't there be a big fireplace at the chalet that we can sit in front of to read?

In reply to an earlier post on Feb 6, 2014 11:04:28 PM PST
Absolutely. There's also likely wifi for our kindles :)

Oooh dear just looked out the window and it is tipping down out there so I have to rush off and clamber into my rain gear if I don't want to look like a drowned rat when I get to work, perhaps I am just trying to get in the mood for Winter Games because rain gear and ski suits are a bit similar to my way of thinking - something I don't like having to wear :-)
Hope to catch you all later - have a good night/day everyone - stay safe and warm
