Hi, I just got my Paperwhite yesterday. I have nearly 600 Kindle books in my library, and I would like to organize them by genre. Am I missing something? I can't find any way to keep my books from becoming a chaotic mess on this device, or for that matter in the Manage Your Kindle page on Amazon.

Thank you for any assistance you can give.

You can create collections and put your books in those.
This page is very helpful

There is a great software called Calibre that is free that allows you great freedom to organize and convert your books. I realize this is not really answering your question as far as amazon and your device. However you can connect your device directly into the software and see what is on your device and quickly add and remove books.

But as previous poster showed the collections is the only way on the actual device

Well, I created 3 collections so far and it works! Thanks for the link! It makes all the difference being able to put all the cookbooks together, etc.

I'll look into Calibre; I know about it but haven't tried it yet; I may need to at some point.

This is a wonderful forum and I think I will visit it regularly.

I'm interested in this discussion. I had an old Kindle Keyboard, but just got my Paperwhite. I was quite accustomed to organizing my books into collections, but that doesn't seem to work on the Paperwhite. According to the link above, these collections are NOT folders, meaning the book is just listed in two places. Did you find a way to truly organize the books so you don't have to scroll through 600 books?

Beth, what isn't working? Collections function the same way on the Paperwhite as they do on the other models.

Beth Holly says:
On the Keyboard, if I put a book in a collection, it removed it from my list - which I liked as a way to just have unread books on my list. After I read them, I'd put them in one of my collections, which removed it from my list. On the paperwhite, putting a book in a collection, doesn't remove it from my list, see below from the Kindle info page:

On the Paperwhite, "A collection is a sorting option - not a folder. Items you add to collections still appear individually when you sort by other options (such as Author)."

I just don't know how you look through 600 books and remember which one's you've read, started, finished, loved, whatever.

Advice?

Make sure you are sorting by "Collection" and not Recent/Title/Author.

Collections on the other models worked the same way...they are tags, not folders.

Nope, pretty sure they were folders on the the Kindle Keyboard. I used it for two years - when I put it in a folder, it no longer appeared on my list. Also, that's what it says on the Keyboard info page.

I'm not sure I'm explaining my issue correctly. I want only unread items to appear in my list. Every book I've read, I then want to put it into a collection. There is still no way to have only unread items show on my list, right?

I think I understand...and it has to be a sorting issue. Try rebooting the Paperwhite first...many times that fixes odd behavior. Then if it still isn't right, post and tell how your sort is done on both of the menus for that.

Collections have never been true folders, they have always been tags.

Oh my gosh, I appreciate your help, but stop saying that! I don't care what you call it, all I care about is that on my Kindle Keyboard, when I put something in a collection, it no longer appeared on my list. On the paperwhite, when I put it in the collection, it is still on my list.

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 5, 2012 5:40:16 PM PST
Yes, I know. Because something is set incorrectly in the "sort" options.

On the KK, if you changed the "sort" to All Items, you would see the individual books. It works the same on the Paperwhite.

Sorry. I find technology frustrating when it doesn't do what I wanted it to do. The problem I was describing was simply some kind of glitch. I rebooted and everything is fixed. Thanks for the advice!

I'm working on it. On the home page, there is a menu bar, and one option is to create a new collection. You can name it whatever you want, e.g. cookbooks, science fiction, etc. When you create it, you can either go through the entire list and choose which to add to. At this point you can also go to the home page, hold your finger on a book and get an option to add to collection already created (can be more than one). You can also check the book description first, in case you forgot what genre it is.

I'm keeping some books in the cloud for now, because it's too much to deal with, and really, how many do I need on the device at one time?

I have one collection for "currently reading", to put library and other active books into.

I too am having the same problem but after several restarts my books are still showing up in both places! So frustrating. Any advice? I hate having to scroll through so many books.

On the kindle paperwhite, is there a way to put the books already in a collection in a different order to alphabetical. I'm wanting to put them in the order the should be read.

@Beth Holly
I use http://kindle.amazon.com/your_reading

I can keep track of all my read versus non read books.

CBRetriever says:
there are only three options: recent (download/read order), title and author

That's a shame. It would have been really useful, considering the number of series which are better read in the correct order.

CBRetriever says:
unless the publisher names them in some sort of order like XXX Series Book 1: BlahBlah that wouldn't work. Even being able to sort by publishing date wouldn't work in most cases because some older books in series are being published after more recent ones as back catalogs are being digitized

In reply to an earlier post on Feb 22, 2013 10:41:31 AM PST
I use fictfact.com to keep track of series and the proper reading order.

On a couple of the larger series I read, I created a Word document with the reading order and sent it to my Kindle. I keep each series in it's own collection so I put the reading order document in the collection with the books.

and then there's Marion Zimmer Bradley and Steven Brust whose books are not written in sequential timelines but go back and forth in time which makes it even harder

Change the sort on the Home page to "Collections".
