Put your finger on the lock, and swipe to the left.

For a second there I was thinking Jackie already "swiped" it. Just sayin'.

It's not you. Had the same experience. It is the most unintuitive thing I've seen. Buy a product and then can't use it/and no directions (why not make the lock something you choose after you've turned on the device for the first time and have set it up?).

good thing I had google and Windows to look this up

there's a black quickstart guide tucked into the top of the box behind the warnings guide

Yes, it consists more or less of just this instruction - how to unlock (and how to charge) - after that the getting started guide on the device takes over. And yet, the OP was not the first one with this question.

and I actually read it this time!!!

also, i noticed, with the update (since mine cam with it already installed) the manual is under the Help & Feedback Menu Item on the Menu when you hit the + on the pulldown Menu

no problem finding it

We had some trouble with this as well. The quick start guide had slid down inside the packaging so we didn't know it was there. This thread helped getting me started. Thanks

Wow - you think the noodniks at Amazon would include a freaking clue with the product that could be readily located. There was no quickstart booklet in ours.. I'll bet hundreds of people hit this wall. Without ever having worked the device, there is no way to know about the 'swipe'. FAIL.

Did you read the second post in this thread?

Put your finger on the lock and swipe it across the screen.

Jackie and others - don't forget to read the manual which is pre-loaded on your new Kindle Fire. It's really a good way to learn the basic functions.

Riiiiight. It's a tablet, which is a basically a baby computer. How long did you expect the battery to last? A day is about right.

The only time I get the Shutdown? question is when I fat-hand the side of the device and bump the power button. Do you have it in a case, to prevent this?

I have had my Kindle for 6 weeks. Yesterday after charging it won't unlock. What do I do?

Just Peachy says:
Unplug it from the charger. Hold the power button for 30 seconds - count them. Release the power button, then touch it again. Your Fire should now start up.
