Do you guys reckon I should buy a kindle paperwhite now, or wait until september/october and see if a new one is released?

I've got quite a few books to read until then, so that shouldn't be a problem. The main concern is I'd rather just get one ASAP if a new version won't be released and there won't be a price drop for some time.

Asking that is like asking what the winning lotto numbers are. No one here knows. If you want a paperwhite, then buy one. If you are willing to wait "just in case" something else is released, then wait. If you wait for something new, you will always be waiting as technology is always improving and advancing...

Well for sure there will be a new kindle by end of fall. It's up to you if you want to wait.

I have a Paperwhite. Before that I read with a Touch and before that a Kindle Basic and before that a Kindle Keyboard. I've upgraded each time since I got my first Kindle because they kept coming out with better ones.

I'm sure there'll be another new one this year or next but the Paperwhite is so good I'm not sure I'll care. With the others, well, they were really good but never really quite "there" yet. The Paperwhite is there.

Maybe the next one will be so much better I'll get it, too, but I'll be surprised. I can't see how they can get much better than this. A built-in recliner? :)

I have a Fire HD. I've had it several months. It works great. I've never had a problem.

I know several other people with them as well and none have had problems.

I hate to disagree with you; but I got one of the originals and have never had a single problem with it. Its over a year old now. Four months ago I got a 7"HD to take advantage of the new advances put in it and I have never had a problem with it either. I know of over a dozen friends that have gotten Fire's also and not a single problem with any of them. Also C-net rates the Fire as one of the better tablets to get. Seems to me you got some bad intell. fdalbor

The OP isn't even asking about the Fires. Not sure why you find the need to keep changing your name and posting nonsense. I do feel sorry for you though...

I have it on good authority that Amazon will be releasing a 24 inch color e-Ink version of the Kindle Paperwhite in September called the "Kindle Tabletop." It will cost $99 and come with a free year of Amazon Prime. Or not.

Seriously though, Amazon doesn't make any announcements about future product releases until they're ready to, and they haven't said anything yet. Anything you read will be pure speculation until the official announcement is released.

Will it have a rear facing camera?

I don't think they are going to release a new kindle by the fall. The paperwhite has only been out for 7 months. It took them almost 3 years to make the paperwhite, which I have and love. I upgraded from the keyboard to the paperwhite. They are going to take a couple years, perfect the paperwhite even more, take what people have to say about it into effect and make a kindle ever greater than the paperwhite. You won't see that for a couple years. One year just isn't enough time. They have the Nook to compete with, they will take their time and come out with a much better product. If you want to upgrade, then do it! You won't regret it!

They will have new ones out this fall for sure. I guarantee it.

Well I wasn't supposed to release that detail, but it actually has a small bulb that pops up from the top and takes a full 360 degree picture, so it's a front-back-left-right facing camera.

Can you also fold it up to put in your pocket?? It has to be portable...

Amazon released other Kindles in the 3 years that it took them to "make the Paperwhite."

I think it rolls up in a tube, but I'll have to check.

ETA: Yes, it uses one of the new flexible screens so it can be rolled but not folded.

I'd bet real money that there will be a new Paperwhite in the fall, possibly with TTS.

Amazon doesn't have to compete with the Nook. B&N management is doing a fine job on their own destroying a good company.

Thought that was still being litigated with Google street view. ;-)

Lol! Thank you all for the secret new release info. Needed something to laugh about today. Of course I must admit I've already started saving for whatever new release is next.
