Bill Hansen says:
Can someone who has actually used an app to create (as opposed to edit) documents on a Kindle Fire HD give me some guidance?

After reading several posts about Office Suite Pro and Quickoffice Pro HD for Tablets (QOP), I mistakenly bought QOP thinking I could create documents with it. I was surprised to find that, for $15, the program is essentially a file browser which allowed me to download and edit documents from my desktop computer - but there was no way to create new docs.

Now I'm looking for a program which will actually allow me to make documents on my KFHD 8.9. I don't mean emails - I mean actual .doc or .docx files. I doubt that I'll have a need to make spreadsheets or power points on the KFHD. Which apps actually work in that way? I see OfficeSuite Pro, and QuickOffice Pro (for phones?). I could blindly purchase one of those, but having almost lost $15 on QOP HD, I'm wary of the product descriptions of these other programs.

Bill - I've used the following on my 1st Gen Fire and 7" Fire HD -

OfficeSuite Professional 8
Docs To Go Premium Key
Quickoffice Pro

They all create documents. I prefer OfficeSuiteProfessional 6 myself, but that's just my personal opinion. I don't know if those are all compatible with the 8.9" Fire HD, though, as I don't have one.

You may want to contact customer support and explain you bought the wrong app. Apps aren't normally refundable, but they may help you out one time.

Click on the big orange 'CONTACT US' button to the right or use this link:
You may have to sign in. I recommend you use the PHONE or CHAT options.
Do NOT use e-Mail.
CALL ME under the PHONE tab is great if available.
They will call you within minutes.

Pineapple - Thanks. I had contacted CS about the QuickOffice Pro purchase, and they were nice enough to refund my $15 - so once again, Amazon's customer service came through.

I looked again at OfficeSuite Pro 6, and went through their "test drive" procedure. The program in the "test drive" looks like it would do what I need. But then I made a foolish mistake: right from the laptop (which I just happened to be using at that moment) I purchased OfficeSuite Pro 6 from the Kindle store, thinking I could easily download it to the KFHD. But it looks like I was wrong about that. The app it shows up in the list of apps I've purchased, but when I try to download it to the KFHD, it wants me to purchase it again.

I've written to CS again, and I expect I'll hear back from them within a day. If I have to purchase again, that's my fault entirely. I need to accept it as a good lesson that apps must be purchased from the Kindle itself, not using another computer, or maybe they can't be installed. That's one lesson I won't forget! I'm learning all these little wrinkles, slowly but surely. Thanks again for the tip on OfficeSuite Pro 6.

Aha! After synching the Kindle, my app was there. So that's another thing I need to learn - always synch after purchasing or downloading. I've got the OfficSuite Pro 6 working now, and I agree - it's perfect for what I need to do. I'm very happy!

Pineapple - one final question - where do you Save documents? Do you always save to an external device (computer, cloud, etc) - and if you sometimes save to the Kindle itself, which folder (which part of the Kindle) is best to use for storage of recently created documents?

I promise that's my last question on this topic.

Bill, I save to evernote as I can sync with my iPhone and work computer. Super handy, free and has sharing options so I can use it to share pics and docs with other people as long as I have the email address they have their account registered to.

GemskiB - Thanks. I had Evernote on my laptop and desktop computers for a while. It's good to have programs/apps which can be shared across platforms. From your post, it sounds as if Evernote has improved in functionality since I last had it. For now, I guess I'll stay with OfficeSuite Pro 6. I had to pay for it of course, but it's a very impressive app, with all the functionality I need. The one thing I don't like about it is that saving documents is a little clunky. I may give Evernote another whirl, until I find an easy way to save OfficeSuite documents.

Bill, I use a Nexus 7, not a Fire HD, with Office Suite Pro. I find it much easier to create lengthy documents using a BT keyboard. Here's the one I have: HP TouchPad Wireless Keyboard . It's very well-made and works great.

Thanks James - I agree, a keyboard transforms the Fire. The one I got is just the Amazon Basics keyboard, and it's excellent.
