I got a Kindle Fire for Christmas. I have had no problems with it and all my books and apps have worked well so far until...I was using my Kindle Fire earlier today to read and play Words with Friends (that came pre-loaded on it). I left it at home and when I came back about 3 hours later and it had a black screen and won't turn on. I thought maybe it was dead, so I plugged it into the charger. The power button didn't light up like it usually does and it won't turn back on. Has anyone else had this problem and do you know how to fix it? I looked up troubleshooting and it says to hard reset but I don't think that works if it won't even turn on. Help! I am terrible with technology!

If you have charged it, try holding the power button down for 20 seconds to restart it.

Mine froze too - I don't have the box to return it in either, so if someone has any ideas on how to fix it I would really appreciate it D:

LOL- I should have clarified. I'd already done this about fifty times and it's still not working. How else do you unfreeze it?

Yes. Same problem. Let battery run down and restart. Also, amazing how hard it is to delete books

@ Maryclaire M. Koch
Is it frozen, or dead? call CS and ask for a return voucher... you can take it to a packing store and get it packed properrly, dont let the "no box" keep you from returning a defective product. If you have tried to hard bood it and it isnt responding.. something must be wrong.. If CS knows a fix they will talk you through it, then you can come back here and post!

You don't need to have it repacked for a return if you opt for an exchange and not a refund then you can return it in the box the new one comes in.

Mine was browsing on Pinterest and froze, I thought the screen would turn off after a while but it didn't, I tried to let it fall asleep but it remained lit up, then I saw your post on holding the power button for 20 seconds, which I thought I had, but turns out 20 seconds pushing a button is longer then I thought, it worked!! Thanks!!!!!!!!!

Please read this regarding freezing or locking up on your Fire. Thanks!
Benefits of Hard Reboot
It isn't really a defect in the product. I'm sure you've had a PC freeze up on you once or twice over the years. The Fire has a limited amount of RAM memory. Over time more and more of that memory can be taken up by bits and pieces of apps and web pages that don't cleanly close or exit. Given enough of this "Garbage" for lack of a better word clogging the memory there becomes less room for the Android operating system to operate. That is when it will lock up or freeze as it tries to find room to work. What we need to do is clean house every so often to restore as much free system memory as possible. System memory being separate from storage memory. What should be done periodically is a "Hard Reboot". This is not a device reset so no data will be lost in the process and your device will operate smoother and faster.
First you should recharge your device for a full 4 hours, regardless of what the charge indicates. Over time the charge indicator and the state of battery charge can get out of sync. This reset will correct that as well.
After the 4 hours disconnect your charger.(Very important step).
Hold the power button in for a full 30 seconds, count them off, don't guess.(This is also very important) Continue holding past the "shutdown request" screen. At the end of the 30 seconds, release the power button and then press once briefly to restart your Fire. It will take a few minutes to restart.
Once you have done this your RAM memory will be free of clutter and the charging indicator will be back in sync. Depending on your usage, I recommend once a week. If someone is a gamer or you do a large amount of web browsing, Facebook, etc. you may need to do it more frequently. Definitely do it as soon as you notice a slow down in performance such as longer times to open apps or web pages, etc. Do these simple steps and you should get a lot of enjoyment out of your device without the dreaded lock up. Enjoy your Fire! Glenn
