We have a new, free over-the-air software update available for Kindle Fire. This update enhances fluidity and performance, improves touch navigation responsiveness, gives you the option to choose which items display on the carousel, and adds the ability to add a password lock on Wi-Fi access. The update will be automatically delivered to your Kindle Fire.

For more information about the software update go to http://www.amazon.com/kindlesoftwareupdates

Sigh. Why do they not think past the end of their noses?

The carousel is there for those that want a way to remember where they have been.

The option to remove an item from the carousel is half baked. The default is to assume to add everything to the carousel and then explicitly remove the items you don't want to show there.

WRONG, WRONG, WRONG:

The default (via a Yes/No option) should be "Do you want your visited items to show in the carousel?"

Then you can say NO to opt out of ANYTHING EVER showing there.

Please give me control of the carousel by allowing me to by default not have ANYTHING bookmarked there.

Then, I can at my choice add those items to the carousel I wish to.

The 6.2.1 update still adds everything to the carousel and requires you to remember to remove. Some of us don't want anything added to a "remember where you have been" object. The right way to implement (based on real user control of their interface environment) would be to provide a Yes/No option on whether to add everything to the carousel automatically or don't add everything to the carousel automatically.

I'm really worried that Amazon is trying to hard to "nanny" me into choosing my carousel bookmarks rather than giving me the control I have on most devices where I'm in control instead of the OS's UI.

It's me again. Just tried something.

Used the new option to remove an item from the carousel. Then I re-opened it them.

Guess What? It now shows up in the carousel.

Really? You mean the first request to remove from the carousel is not respected on subsequent opens of that item. It then re-appears on the carousel.

What UI school is Amazon subscribing to?

If I elect to remove the item from the carousel then that election should ALWAYS be respected for subsequent re-opens of that item.

Jeez, you wonder if their developers actually interface with the real world?

If they don't fix this most basic of needs for their asinine Carousel metaphor then I'm thinking that I can't endorse their products and hopefully the masses will revolt.

It's simple Amazon:

1) Provide an option (Yes/No) to turn the carousel off completely with no bookmarking.
2) If opted in to the carousel then provide an option (Yes/No) to default to adding items to the carousel?

Here I'll help you:

1) Do you want to display your history of opened items in the carousel? (Yes/No)
2) Do you want every opened item to automatically be added to the carousel for easy retrieval? (Yes/No)

My upgrade took less than 2 minutes on wi-fi. Maybe it's incomplete but version is 6.2.1

Amazon,
Thanks for listening to customer suggestions about such items as the carousel and the icons. This is an improvement. I hope you continue to listen to customers. I really hated how the carousel worked. When friends and family want to play with my new Kindle, to see if they want to purchase one, EVERYTHING they click ends up on my carousel. This latest update helps. Also, thanks for removing that irritating Facebook icon and other icon..whatever it was.
In the future, I would appreciate the ability to fully delete such items as Facebook.
Thanks again,
Wakky

Susan,
That has happened to me before. Have you tried holding in the power button for a full 20-30 seconds? This will force a reboot.

Let us know how that goes for you.

William & Daniel & J Spotts,
I'm downloading the file from the Kindle Fire's update page and the download is averaging about 700KB/s for me:

You should try restarting the entire download. Mine started (and stayed at) around 7kb until I restarted it. Now it's going full speed.

Thank you Amazon - my Carousel can now be cleaned up from all the junk that was there (including the facebook junk).

The update was super speedy and the entire upgrade process took about two minutes.

Q says:
Krk,
Amazon rarely gives a lot of details on their updates unless it is a clearly added feature. They mention the ability to remove items from the carousel, because that is an added feature.

There's not much to say about better touch response or fluidity of animations.

Q says:
Actually, we've had the K1, K2, K3 and DX and now the Fire ... and every update arrived automatically (when I waited).

Since we both have K3's, even when I hurriedly got my update manually, my wife received her's within a day or so, silently while she had her wireless on.

So it's not BS. But you *do* need to leave your wireless on to receive it. Be patient. Amazon has millions of owners to push this large update out to.

Or go download it yourself and install it. It's very easy to do.

Wakky,
Amazon may not be reading here. To pass on your suggestion, use the feedback page on your Fire:
