On my Kindle Fire HD, under Device - Storage, there is a category labeled "Others" that has 6.6 GB used up. What falls under this category? Could this be any additional data downloaded by games? It seems like a lot of data being used up.

No not really, I just like to keep it real. You know, keep my feet on the ground by listening to the "people" and not "the man".

Seriously though, I have no idea what I am doing. It didn't occur to me to ask Amazon.

Don.t worry about i t.
That is Fud's standard line.

Don't get put off by Fud - he pops in, says something abrupt, and pops out again.

I personally think Amazon hosts these forums for a reason - so we can share knowledge and ask other users questions, and so save over-burdening Amazon's customer service, and thus help keep costs down.

Hopefully someone will answer soon, though it would probably also be a good idea to use the search option to the right and see if you can find any other threads that mention it (make sure you uncheck the box that says "search only this discussion"). Better still, jump across to the kindle help forum, which is more specifically geared to addressing questions like this, and ask there.

I take it you *have* already read the manual to see if it's mentioned there?

Couldn't find anything else in a search, hopefully somebody will have a good response. I usually benefit more from the plain spoken and often relatable answers provided by user groups than from companies. I have to admit that Amazon customer service has been outstanding, especially for such a large company. Cabela's is like that, when you call their main number someone would answer, "this is cabela's..." instead of a machine or a menu (unless occasionally put on hold).

I bought one for my daughter a 8GB fire and i have the same problem, 5GB of available memory but then 2 is used up by an others catagory. I hope an answer comes soon as now space is running out quickly and I dont want to have to go out and buy a WIFI harddrive for her.....

Wow, that's interesting; I just checked my Fire HD and under "others" mine has 429.0 MB used. Not as much as GB's but I, too, would be curious as to what's being used there. This is an appropriate place to ask the question, J. benton; don't be disturbed by Fud53's non-response.

Bufo Calvin says:
ESS, 429.0 MB makes me ask...did you manually download an update for the device?

Hm...I'll see if I can get an answer to this. I wonder if it is supposed to say "Offers" rather than "Others"? That's the last tab on the homescreen. Probably not, though...I can't imagine those taking up gigabytes of space.

In reply to an earlier post on Jan 12, 2013 9:24:59 PM PST
Josh says:
It is definitely not supposed to be "Offers". It is seen in the device menu, where you can look at the space all the categories are taking up. I am thinking that it is extra-stuff that games/apps download in order to run. As well as other non-Amazon files I have put on the device (comics and videos mostly). At least this will be my assumption until we get a better answer.

Few days ago I tried to free some of the space used by "Others" on my KFHD7. Ten minutes of poking around with ES File Explorer set to show hidden files liberated more than 2G (all from /sdcard) - pre-rendered pages of some local magazines in PDF, thumbnail database for photos removed long ago, old app update files, DropBox cache... I have only three games, so pickings were slim in that area. Later use of the device showed that none of deleted files has been missed.

I had been wondering that myself... Mine was at 288.4Mb I emptied out my Silk browser cache and history files, and it reduced it by a whopping .2Mb, leaving me with 288.2Mb.

After that, I went into my SYSINFO program, and deleted the cache files from the Launcher (about 87Mb). That reduced my total "others" storage to about 265MB... not what I was expecting.

So... it seems that the cache files have something to do with it, but it certainly isn't a direct 1:1 correlation.

Will keep fiddling with it to see what else makes it tick!

AJ says:
I have emptied my caches on all programs and also gone through my SD memory and deleted and handful of files, yet my "others" memory remains at 3.6GBs.
I have brought our question to the XDA forums for the Kindle Fire HD, im hoping to see a response from someone there that might be right. The link is below if anyone else wishes to follow this as well.

Dang, I wish someone that knows would answer this. I was just getting ready to post exactly the same question. On mine there is 4.2 G of 12.9 available. Videos and Personal Videos only take up 7.7 Gigs, music 155 Meg, etc. But the "Others" takes up 4.9 Gig on mine.

Thanks for starting this thread.

On my Fire HD I have movies downloaded through an App called Flixter as well as several sideloaded movies not in MP4 format. Those files are included in my "Others" total. I tested it by deleting them.

S Johnson says:
Think this could help guys:

Right, so basically when you download some games, only a small percentage gets saved to the apps and a large chunk gets saved to the others folder. Gameloft being a major one for this. Download a free app from the app store called file manager. I deleted the Gameloft folder and cleared nearly 2gb from my 3.3gb others storage. If you poke around file manager you can probably find out what other games are doing the same. Hope this helps you all.

I have been on the phone with Kindle Help twice and even they don't know. He had me unload my personal videos which did not free anything up. He had me do a reset which did nothing but erase my email settings! ;-( The kid that is helping me is going to check with programmers and get back to me.

S Johnson, yes, it seems to be some sort of application data but I don't have any games on mine. Nor do I have any type of applications that store THAT amount of data. At least I don't think so. He is supposed to call me back but I suspect that I will have to call them when I can.

I was messing around and deleted apps i didn't use the others shrunk a lot.

Ron Petersen says:
Quinn, I don't mean this to be argumentative. But I started deleting apps and it didn't decrease the "Others" size on mine at all! ;-( Probably depends on what app. I'll try deleting a couple more. This is becoming a quest.

I spoke with a rep from Kindle Help yesterday. He basically said that they don't know what goes in "Others"! I've been on the phone with him two or three times with no satisfaction.

M.T says:
Problem solved for me. At first, Nothing I did got rid of the "Other' storage space. I unistalled everything and that category was still taking up 11 GBs. So I just downloaded an App Cleaner from the app store, and searched and cleared cache on there. As I was poking around in the App cleaner, I came across a file/folder that read "REC/FORGE" and was taking up 11GBs. don't know where it came from or what it does. i deleted it via App Cleaner and got all my space back. Been using it for a few days and no problems at all. I just can't figure out why that file and/or folders were so hidden.

I spoke to a Amazon Customer service guy and he said that the others storage is made up of files and data that keep the kindle fire hd working correctly. And the progress of your books and games. Yeah I had the same problem with 3 GB being others, so yeah.

Posted on May 26, 2013 11:22:07 PM PDT
So, what is the verdict? M.T says he got into it and deleted it but veronica says its to keep it running. And why haven't we got a clear answer on this yet?

We have the same problem and after reading these posts I started deleting a bunch of minecraft worlds on my boys Kindles and the memory in the other category started dropping.
