I'm enjoying my Paperwhite with the X-ray feature, but I've noticed that X-ray and page numbers (when enabled for the particular book) are NOT available as soon as you download the book. I assume that some sort of indexing is being done in the background. After a while, page numbers appear and X-ray is enabled. You just need to be patient. I haven't bothered to time the process, but my rough estimate is 5 to 10 minutes or more.

That's interesting. I wonder why.

The Blade says:
AFAIK, it is because there is a separate file that contains that info. If you sideload, you usually sideload just the .azw file. When you sync, you pull in the appropriate files for a variety of other functions. Indexing links the files.

At least I think that is how it works. Some speculation on my part, admittedly.

That seems logical.

quite true - I ran an experiment the other day on a book I knew had xray and page numbers

1. sideload vi usb = no page numbers and no xray
2. sync and voila, they appeared
3. download wirelessly and they were there

and a separate folder was created that held the associated files
