Kindle Fire and non-Audible audiobooks

Just bought a Kindle Fire. Somewhere in the documentation I was instructed how to move my own videos to it via USB - and that worked.

I have a number of 'audiobooks' from 'The Great Courses' that move seamlessly to my iPad via iTunes, but amazon apparently only tolerates audiobooks bought from amazon; there seems to be no interface to import them (even using the 'cloud') and copying them via USB to the audiobooks folder is ineffective.

Has anyone figured this out? [Amazon documentation is criminally atrocious.]

I have had success with audiobooks and music in MP3 format. I have transferred it via USB and put it in the "music" folder and it plays fine.

P.S. I believe the "Audiobooks" tab is only for Audible, just like the "video" tab is only for Amazon purchased video.

If they are in Mp3 format, wouldn't it show under music? I have a couple audio books not from Audible and they show up under music.

Thanks, Laura & Nospin.

Mine are m4b format, but I'll try loading them as music and let you know.

FYI: The music loader won't recognize these files, which is why I didn't think to force it.

ALSO: iPad OS 4 not only saw them as audiobooks but played them sequentially; iPad OS 5 sees them the same but can't figure out what I might possibly want to hear next after listening to, e.g., Lecture 6, but if I manually create a playlist - in which Lecture 7 is automatically enrolled behind Lecture 6 - that problem is solved.

Copying m4b files to the music folder doesn't work; they are invisible.

I have the option to download mp3 files, so I will try that next. As I did with the m4b files, I'll isolate them in a folder (as amazon has done with the music albums I have installed on the Fire) under Music.

I will report my progress. Thanks again.

B. Marks says:
I've put MP3 audiobooks in the Music folder of my Fire and they played just fine. You have to find them as music, not as audiobooks because the Kindle means Audible when it says audiobooks.

I've also listened to a Great Courses audio on the Fire. You can re-download it from TTC in MP3 which the Fire can play just fine. They let you download as often as you need to in any format you choose.

Those are good courses and I enjoy them. I generally prefer the video lectures but really you get the full information either way.

Yes, that works.

To be specific: I created a folder under 'Music' on the Kindle Fire and copied mp3 files into it. Fire reports them as a music album and even attaches appropriate cover art.

It will be a bother to download a second copy of these courses but not prohibitive.

BTW: the audio on the Fire is notably superior to that on the iPad 1.0.

And, to be thorough, for my video courses, it was straightforward to copy m4v files to the 'Movies' folder on the Fire.

Case closed. I guess. Go figure. Thanks all.
