With the Kindle Fire HD, can you buy apps from more than just the Amazon App Store?

Can you purchase them through Google Play?

I use 1mobile and getjar

I don't think Google Play will install on a Kindle Fire w/o rooting (I could be wrong)

You are correct. Installing Google Play requires rooting because it requires the Google services package which must be installed in a system directory.

Can you explain how to go about "rooting" it? Also, how do you get 1mobile and getjar?

You probably don't want to "root" your Fire as you will lose the Amazon integration. You can get to those websites by going to their .com addresses.

Okay. Thanks. I'm not even sure what "rooting" is! I'm looking at getting 3 of these for Christmas presents and want to make sure I'm informed before I buy!! If I go to the .com addresses of the other sites, can I download the apps right from there to the KFHD?

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 4, 2012 4:34:15 PM PST
Each of those sites has it's own app that you can download to the KFHD and then you can use the app to browse and purchase other apps. You will have to change the settings on the Fire HD to allow installation of Applications from unknown sources. Also, if you have another Android device that can use Google Play, it's possible to "sideload" the free apps on to the Kindle Fire. Google "Sideloading Apps from Google Play ont the Kindle Fire HD" for more info.

"Rooting" is a way to customize an Android device by replacing the stock operating system and interface with a custom one. It's great if you want to tinker but I would never recommend doing it on a Kindle Fire.

If you don't know what rooting is, you don't need to be doing it. ;) You should be able to get most apps you want from Amazon, 1mobile, getjar and a few other places. Rooting is best left to the nerds.

...says the nerd who has rooted, gone back to stock and ended up rooting again. lol

I'm definitely NOT going to try rooting them! I was just curious is all about what it was! :) I'll leave all that jazz upto other people! Thank you all for your input!
