Is it possible to tether my Kindle Fire HD to my phone so that I can get online where there is no WiFi? I'd like to stream movies or Facebook while on a road trip soon. If possible, what is the best tethering app for the job?

If you can use your smart phone to create a WiFi signal, you can do that. You can't physically link them together.

You don't have to have a product to create a hotspot - most of the carriers have it built into the phone and you just turn on the service (now as low as $10 for some carriers). For those trying to violate their carriers contracts, there are various apps that can assist. It isn't done thru tethering, tho, as that involves a USB connection to a pc or laptop (the phone acts as a network card to the device). With a hotspot, instead you are turning the phone into an access point, just like what you use anywhere to access the internet.
