Hi folks,
Can the Kindle Fire HD be utilized as GPS? If so... Is an APP needed?
Thanks!

Only the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 4G LTE model has a GPS chip. Yes, you would need an app depending on what you want to do.

I thank you folks!
I saw an external USB GPS sensor so I wondered if it would work on my new fire HD 7" but I do believe you folks answered my question. Data plan could be a killer ... even if my Kindle were capable of a mobile connection.
Thanks!

You got "big data plan" right. The maps and turn-by-turn for Mapquest comes over the 4g link. Even then my Fire 8.9 4 att service doesn't work in the country where we make heavy use of our Garmin.

I don't think this tablet gps 3/4g paradigm is exclusive to the Fire. I tried to use Google Maps on 2 different Verizon Galaxy Tabs with unlimited data plans, and they worked poorly too. The tablets lost direction/map sync in the country and between cel towers and the GPS antennas lost sight of the satellites in the big buildings in downtown DC, Chicago, and Kansas City.

I have an iPhone and never use Navigator or any of those online resources. I bought the TomTom app and it doesn't consume data at all, which saves me money and also works when I am not near WiFi or even 3G coverage. I do not know if there are similar standalone apps for the Fire, but if Garmin or TomTom makes one, I'd check it out. Be aware that the price you pay to not download data as you navigate is that you must store significant data on your device. My TomTom app uses 1.5 GB.

I'm not sure if you can run it on native Kindle but I run Sygic on my Nexus 7. It works great and it works offline. You download the maps to your devices and never touch your data plan. The interface is great and the turn by turn shows you lane changes and ramps for the tricky ones. They do a lifetime all inclusive plan for around $90. That is for the software and WORLD maps with life time updates. You cannot beat that deal.

Works great with Google Maps and if you lose the Internet it still works but without the map detail ... that is, it will be simplified but still maintains your position and when you come back into a service area then detailed maps pop up right on track. I have both Co Pilot and Sygic (and I like them both) but I was running both on smart phones coming into Missoula, MT and they both lost GPS position and froze with no progress. I pulled up the Kindle Fire HD (AT&T connection) setup my route and followed through town just following Google Maps Navigate. So I'm sold. I just wish the Kindle would let me install both my offline GPS apps mentioned above ... I'm sure they will work.
