The $139 Fire HD doesn't have a camera. Is that the one you bought?

If you purchased it from Amazon, you can return it in the first 30 days, if it isn't the one you need. You also need a WiFi signal in your home/apartment to use most of what it is designed for.

All tablets need WiFi.

If you had checked the product specs, the $139 Kindle Fire does not have a camera. Therefore, a "free camera app" won't help. If you want to use Skype for text messaging, then did you check the Amazon app store????

Product specs found here - Kindle Fire HD 7", HD Display, Wi-Fi, 8 GB - Includes Special Offers (Previous Generation - 3rd)

Just scroll down and you will see the comparison chart the lists all the Fires.

If you purchased the Fire from Amazon, you have 30 days to return it, no questions asked.

In the future I recommend reading the product page to make sure the device does what you want. Make a list of things that are important to you. If you don't know what you want then I suggest finding a friend or relative that knows about these things to help you.

First and foremost, the CURRENT Kindle Fire HD being sold on the Amazon does NOT have a camera. The previous generation of Kindle Fire HD DID have a front facing camera. When the new Kindle Models came out at the end of 2013 which introduced the HDX line, they changed the basic Kindle Fire HD and removed the camera, microphone as well as the micro-HDMI port. So, provided you have an older version of the Kindle Fire HD that DOES have a camera, go to the Amazon App Store and search for whatever apps you are looking for. Search for Skype and you'll find a free Skype app for the Kindle Fire HD. There are apps for the camera as well but keep in mind the camera is front facing so it's meant basically for use with Skype so you can see the person you are talking to. It's not really mean for taking general pictures or video. You can find regular picture and video apps for free on the Amazon App Store but again, taking regular pictures or video isn't very practical with the screen facing away from you while you. Some have suggested taking pictures or video back over you shoulder so you can see what you are taking a picture or video of on the screen but that seems rather impractical as well. Finally, if you decide the Kindle Fire HD isn't for you then simply return it. Provided you purchased the Kindle Fire HD through Amazon, you have 30 days to return it. If you purchased it elsewhere you may be subject to whatever their return policy is. Amazon is very good about returns with the 30 day window.

Lee, the camera that IS on some models is front facing only, designed for Skype video chatting. The Fire was never intended to be a camera.

Only the Fire HDX 8.9" model has both front and rear cameras. But it's not meant to be a camera substitute.

You really should do some reading...buying any device without knowing what it is, what it is designed to do, and what it can't do, can be a expensive thing to do.

I know what you mean. I just bought a new car and thought it had rocket boosters. Imagine my surprise when I drove off of the cliff and it didn't fly. It was just ridiculous they weren't included.

Why would you expect all tablets to all have the same things?? That is why you should make a list of important things that you want and then do research. Don't just look at all the pretty pictures.

Since you just bought it, you can return it.

It's always a good plan to read the specs of something before you purchase it.

Not particularly nice, but really, really funny!

What is ridiculous is expecting an e-reader, or tablet, to be a camera. It is not primarily for "taking pictures". The pictures such things do take-when they do-are NOT high quality images for family photo albums, or magazine covers, They are low quality images for emailing, and phone conferencing. Expecting products to do what you think they should, even when their ads say they won't, is REALLY ridiculous.

If you want to take pictures, don't buy a tablet. Buy a camera.

"The for reply. But for kindle fire HD not to have a normal camera so I can take photos is ridiculous."

Why is it ridiculous?

I think the idea of people buying something that they knew NOTHING ABOUT before they bought it is ridiculous also...

The Artist says:
That's not something a lot of people would have thought it was necessary to bring. They just "expect" something to exist, and reality automatically shifts to meet their expectations.
