Well I finally got some satisfactory answers from Amazon. I had to return my fourth Kindle Paperwhite - 3G w/o special offers Kindle PW, as well as my previous three wifi with special offers. I received a phone call from a rep from a special Kindle Paperwhite team and was informed that Amazon and Jeff Bezos are well-aware of the issue of the discoloration of the screens. She said it is a huge issue and they are working to resolve it ASAP. She told me they are manufacturing new Kindle PaperWhites and are making adjustments to the LED lights - which is the reason for the problem, according to the engineers. She said she would stay in contact with me and when they have the new Kindle PaperWhites with no screen issues, she will have one sent out to me immediately. She is also extending my return time to 90 days and said not to worry that even if it goes beyond that time period when the newly manufactured PWs are available, I will be sent one. (But I sure HOPE it doesn't take that long!)

Amazon - you are one fantastic company! Even though I've had significant frustration with four Kindle PaperWhites, it is worth the wait because I know that eventually they will get this production error corrected.

Hang in there, people. If you still have a Paperwhite with screen problems, it WILL be taken care of for you-IF you are willing to wait for the new production of Kinfle PaperWhites.

I hope it extends to everyone!

Only to those who have legitimate and verifiable screen discolorations (according to my understanding).

But if they are making material changes to the model, then it should apply to all with the older model!

P. M. H. says:
I still think it may have been a specific problem production line or factory. The problems screens seem to appear more in the first wave of Paperwhites delivered. This could also explain the current long delay in shipping new orders, if they had to correct all coming from a specific source.

I've had my Kindle Paperewhite for a while now and my screen is great. I don't want them making any changes to it.

P. M. H. says:
Barry, mine is great also. Don't think there is any question of changing our great screens. They are just going to fix the problems with the not-so-great screens. Think this is a hardware problem, not something they are going to fix via a software update. Folks with problem screens should get new Paperwhites.

Pauletta says:
They are fixing the LEDs as far as I know. People who have the screen problems with coloration will be able to get a replacement. That's the idea conveyed to me.

Pauletta says:
That's great. Then you are one of the fortunate ones who don't need a replacement. :)

Pauletta says:
That's correct. It is a hardware problem. The people who have bad screens will be eligible for a replacement if requested.

Nobody says:
Will Amazon announce that, or will they simply wait for the "silent" bad-screen owners to contact them? I'm kinda doubting that they spelled the policy out for you, but I'm asking just in case I'm wrong.

So will this also apply to those who have ordered recently and not received it yet? My Kindle PW was just ordered 3 days ago and scheduled to ship middle of December.

Yours will most likely not be affected.

I do understand that. I wasn't reacting in fear that they'd change mine. I was just letting the person who said that Amaxon should fix all the previosly sold Paperwhites know that not all need to be fixed. I put it the way I did in an apparently failed attempt at humor. :)

@Nobody: I haven't got a clue. I only know what she told me about my Kindle PW, which will be replaced with a newly manufactured one. I suppose you can call in a month or two and ask if they have the new stock for a replacement. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

Unless it's an official announcement from Amazon, it's hearsay.

Pauletta says:
No hearsay...I was called by a member of Kindle Paperwhite team who told me that they are well-aware of this big issue and are working to resolve it with new Kindle PaperWhites. She told me to have patience that I would receive one if the new ones. I think that might be the reason there is a 5-7 week wait on new orders (according to the web site).

I just wondered out of curiosity about how they'll handle the replacements. I'm sticking with the one I have because I find I'm quite happy using it without the light and have decided I'll never miss it.

I wonder what the root of the problem is and whether Amazon is going to make an official announcement at their website similar to the announcement they already made with the four shadows at the bottom of the screen.

Joan Marie says:
I've had my PW since the day it was released. I've adjusted to the 4 dark smudges at the bottom by the lights. But I am not sure what else is "normal" for the PW. For example, I can the shadow of the lines of text for the next page on the page I'm reading. Imagine layering a sheet of onion skin paper over the page of a book & seeing the faint image of the lines of text below the paper. And there is a slight halo around the text on the screen I am reading. But there is no color or defective pixels on the screen. So can everyone see the upcoming lines of text on their current pages? Is it the norm?

R. D. Clark says:
Hearsay. You say you heard it. That's the very definition of hearsay. When Amazon makes a public announcement of this policy, or a sufficient number of independent witnesses attest to it, it stops being hearsay.

S. Dunham says:
It will be worth the wait. I got my PW 3G w/SO in the 2nd wave, and I don't have any problems with it. I love the screen. Not a fan of it being a touch screen though. I feel bad for those that not only got a damaged Kindle but damaged replacements.

Nobody says:
If you set your PW to refresh every page, your problem will probably go away. If you've already set it to do that, I'd say you have a defective PW.

I think I'll keep my original "first wave" Paperwhite. I've kind of grown fond of it, warts and all. Besides, who knows what mess of problems a newly revised Paperwhite might have (or develop) once received and used for a while. :)

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 4, 2012 6:26:57 PM PST
Pauletta says:
Yes, that happens when the page needs refreshing, which by default us set to every six page turns. You can set it to refresh at every page turn if you'd like. I don't like it on every page turn because the flashing dark-to-light bothers me.
