Newer stories about the impending Kindle Fire 2. Looks like one may have 4G, and a 10" screen coming out later. Also, the original Fire may be reduced in price.....

Nothing but rumours and speculation but seems more informed now...

I would be surprised, nay, SHOCKED if any Fire device had built in 4G.

IMHO.

Doesn't make business sense for Amazon.

Well, 3G or 4G with empty SIM slot would work...

and probably be either very expensive or come with a data plan

"come with a data plan"

With open SIM slot, that would be user's post-sale responsibility, with possibility to shop around (of course, with data roaming prices in mind).

JimmyTheD says:
Yeah, the empty SIM slot would give the owner the option for the plan.

But, still, that would have to be one beefy data plan if you plan to use wireless for all your streaming.

CBRetriever says:
true, but I wouldn't want to be locked into a plan given that I may be going on to another posting September of next year (I'm planning on letting my phone plan expire and just buy minutes after that as it's actually more cost effective for me)

I was just trying to post the latest news or rumours and afraid the thread got buried too fast......

Surveyah says:
well if you look back thru all the threads since its announcement last September, the question "does it have 3G?" is probably at the top of the list (or close to it). Amazon may simply be responding.....with options......like the camera/no camera.......sim slot/no sim slot...etc. Look at the options for the current crop of Kindles.... 3G/no 3G....

no problem, just letting you know that we (fellow kindle users) don't know either

personally, I'm not waiting on it and don't plan on getting one (I did say that about the Touch and the instant translation changed my mind on it)

There are pre-paid schemes with (relatively) affordable data traffic...

"Doesn't make business sense for Amazon. "

Why not? It's really just a bit more electronics. Amazon won't provide free 4G service. It will be like other tablets in that you will need to provide your own data plan.

Amazon does sell cell phones already and plans through the 4 major US carriers...

Surveyah says:
because its more than just speculation......just because Amazon hasn't made a formal announcement yet, does not mean that what they are reporting based on their sources or information is not valid. It probably WILL be a few different options with 4G....with a camera.....with a 10"screen.

They just don't pull this outa their butts...

Lemme tell you a little secret.

80%+ of "technology news" is press releases. Sometimes with 10% modified content by the "reporter" but usually word for word from the corporate PR department. (Trust me, I used to WRITE those press releases and we would eagerly track where they appeared.)

80% of the remainder is pretty much a 'reporter' quoting some dude who said something on some on line forum somewhere. Oh, and guess what, the PR department from big companies plant those dudes, or ask their employees to be that dude. Where I work now we encourage our employees to mention the company in a positive light online.

Of the remaining 4% most of that is wild speculation that the reporter came up with under the influence of A) alcohol B) drugs C) praise of his followers D) his own ego, or E) All of the above.

The remaining tiny, tiny percentage is actual hard gained reporting. And it will be relegated to page six.
