How do I export kindle library to Calibre. I can't figure out how to get them over there. I have set up Calibre and a special gmail account but I can't find my device on the Calibre main page.

I connect my K3 to the PC and then Calibre sees all the books on it and puts a green check mark in a column to the left of the central part of the Calibre screen. I've never bothered with setting up the email connection - USB is much faster.

Calibre is a beast and even though I've used it for 9 months I'm still working my way through it. Calibre's user manual is pretty good and Kovid (Calibre's creator) hangs out over at mobileread in the Calibre forum.

First the obvious, your Kindle is connected by USB right? Also make sure you didn't accidentally eject the kindle, not physically just the "safely remove the hardware" thing. I've done this :) Ejecting and re-connecting might fix whatever problem it's having too. I've also walked away from my computer with Kindle attached and when I come back and bring it out of sleep mode, Calibre no longer sees my Kindle. So I just unplug it and plug it back in.

These are the buttons you should see on the top row of Calibre when your Kindle is connected from left to right: Add Books, Edit Metadata, Covert Books, View, Send to Device, Library, Device, Fetch News and so on. The important one is the Device button. If your Kindle isn't connected or Calibre isn't recognizing it you won't have that button. It is only visible when your Kindle is connected. Hit that and it will list everything on your Kindle. Another thing I've done is search for something in the Calibre library and then move to the device. The books on my Kindle don't appear because nothing matches the search criteria. So just delete whatever is in the search box. (easy way is to hit the second button to the right of the box, it looks like a pencil with an X in it). Easiest way to move the whole shebang to Calibre is to select all the books that don't have the green check mark in the "In Library" column (which is sortable) and then right mouse click to find "add books to library". You won't be able to read them from Calibre, but you'll have a back up.

I hope I helped and didn't run on too much. I wasn't sure how tech savvy you are. If you've looked at all that and are still having a problem, contact Kovid.
