I just bought the Kindle Fire HD and it seems like I am always having to charge up the battery. I don't have the super power charger yet, but had a few questions. 1) if you hit the power button off for 20 seconds, it turns off. What is the difference between doing that and clicking on 'shutdown? 2) what are the differences between the usb charger and the power charger, besides the amount of time it takes to charge? Thanks for any help that anybody can give me.

Holding the power button for 20 seconds shuts down fully, and will trigger a reboot the next time you press power. Kindles, like most other devices, need a reboot occasionally, but you certainly don't need to shut down or reboot every time. Doing so is likely to use more power than just putting the Fire to sleep when not in use.

Charging from a usb port on the computer will take about 13 hours. Charging from a wall outlet will take about 4 hours. No other difference besides time, that I'm aware of.

How long is your Fire lasting between charges? There's some good information here -

Are you leaving the wi fi on or playing videos or games? If so, that will drain the battery much fast than just reading.

1) If you press and hold the power button until the fire shuts off (bypassing the "shut down" message, then you are actually doing a hard reboot. Doesn't hurt to do this every so often, but it's not the way to shut the Fire down. Pres the power button once to go into "sleep" mode, or hold it till you see the "Shut Down" message and click yes when it's prompts you to shut down.

2) Charging with a USB cable plugged into a computer will take 13 hours. Using the PowerFast AC adapter, about 4 hours.

I'm turning off the wif-fi when not using. I will no longer do that hard reboot. Thanks to you and Ann - thank you for the info.

Do you have to charge everyday?

The very short battery life is why I went to the PaperWhite. That and the weight of the Fire and the screen glare. Wasn't for me.

It depends on how often/how much you are using the Fire HD. It's supposed to get 11 hours on one charge, but it will be less if you are doing something like streaming video.

Most tablets you have to charge daily depending on what you are doing with it. I watch videos and play games on my tablet and I usually get between 6-8 hours per charge.

Okay, thank you for all your help. I totally get it now. Jazzy Jeff - yeah, that's what i'm getting about 6-8 hours. i love the Fire HD - it's wonderful and reading a book is so much nicer with that light! I had the kindle keyboard. I do miss some of the games though :(

I use an e-ink Kindle to read on and I use my tablet for every thing else.
