I had points on one of my credit cards that I use for amazon.com purchases. I own two Kindles. Both models are Kindle Keyboards. One Kindle has developed a slight problem. Every once in a blue moon, the screen doesn't refresh and it goes black. It's happened, at least, a few times. So, I'm thinking it might be time to get a replacement.

I decided to go with the DX rather than a Paperwhite. (And plus, I had those points to shop with). I was curious about the larger screen. I do own a 10" Android tablet, but it gets heavy when reading with the Kindle app.

So, any comments from DX users? Did I make a good choice?

I've had a DX since early 2011, but since I got my Paperwhite, I rarely use it. I need the light the Paperwhite offers, and the lack of page turn buttons on the left of the DX was a small annoyance.

I think it depends on your reading style. The DX is very nice for the larger screen, when you have to use a large font, as I do. It just isn't as convenient for me, especially for taking along when I leave the house. It's too big to fit in a purse, unless you carry a very large type. Which I don't.

The Paperwhite has spoiled me totally.

I just got my DX on June 26th, and I love it! I got the PW back in October. I really love having that front lit screen, but the DX has taken over as being my favorite Kindle now. Even though it is 2nd generation. I was kind of surprised that the DX isn't all that heavy...even with the leather cover. My plan was to use the DX to read at home and keep the PW in my purse. This is the first day that I didn't bring my DX to work with me. I kind of miss it. The huge screen is just amazing.

I've been reading on my DX every night. I'd probably bring it to work or when I'm volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House, but not when I'm just shopping or out and about. I have a K2, 2 KKs, a PW, a Kindle Fire HD 8.9", and now a DX. I don't think Amazon is going to continue the DX line, but if they come out with a PW DX, I am so there. Enjoy your DX!

BTW, folks, I bought my Kindle DX directly from Amazon. I'm assuming this is a brand new item. I ask because I'm reading in some reviews that Amazon has discontinued the DX. Is this true? If so, I do hope mine IS new nd I guess I purchased just in time.

Congrats on your DX, Mark!

It had been *assumed* to be discontinued when it disappeared from the Kindle lineup months ago, but no one actually knew for certain. Recently, when it reappeared, one person in particular was all over the forum saying he was told by CS that they're refurbished ones but he refused to back that up. I searched "certified refurbished Kindle" and found zero refurbs that way, then via live chat AND phone, Amazon confirmed there were no refurbs and went so far as to tell me they would check out this person who was saying otherwise on the forum. So I'd venture to guess he may be one of those reviewers.

I have had my second generation DX since it came out. I have an iPad and a kindle keyboard. I love my Kindles because I love to read. I travel with my kindle keyboard always. I have my DX at the office. Settling down to read with my DX is like cuddling up with a Big Book. I love the large screen and I as much as I read I love the paperback book look and not the LED of my iPad with the kindle app. The reason it goes to work with me is because when I have to read a lot of books for work and pdf documents my eyes appreciate the kindle screen both the size and the easy on the eyes

Thanks! Nice to know someone other than my dogs actually listens to me. LOL. When I got my DX, I had to drive down the road several miles to get a signal. It reminded me of the download drives I took for my K2. I recently left my PW at work over a weekend and had to use a KK. I already missed the page turn buttons as it was, so I've been alternating with my PW and KK. It's so nice to have page turn buttons again when reading the DX. Especially when you don't have to turn the page as often. I've wanted one for a while, but the $499 and $399 price tags were a bit too high. And I already had a few Kindles, so it was hard to justify that money. I started buying gift cards each week to buy the DX once it was listed again. I absolutely love it. Glad I was able to be of some help. Let us know what you think of it after you get it.

It is discontinued, I believe these are leftovers. Shouldn't matter and no they'd say refurbished or something if they weren't new. I love mine and will be bummed when it dies. I've had one since they first came out. (May 2009) It's a US one and on Sprint. I don't use it since I got my DXG but if this or my back up die I may pull it out. I charge it once a month to make sure it still works.

I've never had a problem with the page turning thing. Seems natural to me. You reach over to the right to turn a DTB.

SSD, thanks for your comments and the link. I'm afraid I'm a bit lost...Who/What is CS? :)

Customer service.

Mark says:
Okay, so someone POSING as Customer Service was making these comments? Or was it someone from CS who was misinformed? I'd think the latter.

In reply to an earlier post on Jul 3, 2013 9:03:06 AM PDT
Dittie says:
It was just a forum user claiming that customer service "verified" they were refurbs. The thing is, this forum is a customer community where people get to know each other and ultimately learn that some people are credible and some, not so much. So I actually did contact customer service, not once but twice. Anyway, were they refurbs and you weren't made aware of that, that's a big legal no-no for Amazon.

No telling how trained the CS is. I know my son did technical support for Dell and HP when he was 17. He said that some of the people knew less than the people who needed support.

That's why I checked and then I double checked by making a phone call a couple days later.

Well, thank you very much for clarifying.:) I'm quite confident now that, because of your info (and purchasing directly from Amazon), the DX is new.:)

Really looking forward to using it this weekend.:)

I'll check my box when I get home. Amazon is selling refurbs and used ones as well. This is supposed to be new. It looks like new. If it is a refurb, there should be an R on the box by the serial number. I'll post again after I check my DX box.

Dittie says:
A search doesn't bring up any refurb DXs right now, it didn't on the day I chatted or on the day I called. That's not to say there haven't been any in between or that I didn't get two people who were wrong when I contacted CS, but I think the odds are incredibly small that Amazon would take the chance of selling something as new when it's actually not.

In reply to an earlier post on Jul 3, 2013 1:23:32 PM PDT
S. Dunham says:
If you look at the listing for the DX, there are options for used ones that are being sold by Amazon as well as private sellers. There isn't a separate listing for a DX refurb. But I'm curious now and will be leaving work in a few minutes. I can't wait to check the box. I don't think Amazon would pass off a refurb when the listing is new.

In reply to an earlier post on Jul 3, 2013 1:33:32 PM PDT
Dittie says:
Yes, but those used ones and the ones by third party sellers were there all along. Refurbs weren't showing up then and they aren't now, though almost every other kindle model does. We can only speculate beyond that but their having disappeared once would likely indicate they're out of production, which in turn would indicate some still-new ones were lost track of in a warehouse somewhere or were taken back from resellers such as Staples and/or Best Buy and the price was lowered just to move that remaining quantity. Heck, for all we know, the devices were there all along and they couldn't find the boxes.

I just opened, unpacked and booted my Kindle DX! Wow! This thing is GORGEOUS!! I can't believe how nice the display is! And I checked box....no "R.":) It's brand spankin' new!

My desktop computer is in the basement. I have the Kindle DX upstairs charging. It's already registered, etc. I went into my account and grabbed some books and active content that I wanted to have on my DX. By the time I got upstairs, it was all there!:) Wow!:)

I also have a cover I used for a tablet that didn't quite work, so I put it aside...it might work for the DX.:) I'll give it a go.:)

Thanks to everyone for all your input and info.:) Greatly appreciated.:)

Well, I'm fully charged and looking over the features. I noticed that the page advance buttons are slightly different. They toggle with the inside edge (closest to screen) whereas, the KK's page advance buttons toggle using the outside edge.

I have to get used to the power button on top as well as the Home button. No big deal. And the maneuver paddle is a bit different but easy to use.

Now, this is probably the most frequently asked question when someone gets a new DX. How do I modify the screen saver? Can we add other authors? Can we just use one author and no others? Jules Verne's portrait is cool.:)

This thing is awesome!
