I didn't see WMA mentioned as a supported format. Can't say that I'd buy a Fire if I have to re-rip my CDs in MP3 or OGG to play them. At least iTunes will convert for you.

Other programs will also convert to mp3 as well. Why should an Android (Linux) device support a Windows closed format? Oh well, it is your choice.

Because this is a modified version of android and amazon has said they are not going to restrict devs you will be able to side load any number of apps that plays wma.

I found an App called TTPOD on regular Droid Apps Market and basically sideloaded it on my Fire... downloaded it to my phone, then backed it up with Astro, saved the backup file on my PC, transferred it to my Kindle Fire, then installed it with ES File App. This may seem like a long way to go... but this program (TTPOD) will play WMA files... so yeah I'm happy. And I li9ke the program a lot.

Because WMA files sound better at half the bitrate of MP3 so I can get twice as many songs on the limited memory of the FIRE using WMA files which I used on all my portable devices. (Sansa media player, Android Bionic Phone, iRiver Recorder/player) They all support WMA why no WMA playback on the FIRE supplied media player?

wondering if sideloading wma files will allow download from OVerdrive audio books from libraries.

The Overdrive library site has an app that works on the Kindle Fire for playing WMA audio books. It's worth a try. Go to the Overdrive web site. They gave me good instructions for installing this non-Amazon app and I was able to listen to a WMA audio book that I checked out.

I have downloaded the non amazon app they instructed me to download for my Kindle, and it does not support WMA files, could you explain how you did this? I can play mp3 files but that is about it... very limiting, very disappointed!

Grrr. I know my way around a Pc and I'm getting there with my K-fire but I cant seem to find or figure out how to dwnld the wma app from overdrive or anywhere else. Is there a newbie friendly step by step way to get my dumb wma files on my K-fire? I don't want to file share with my Pc. That's kind of annoying to me. Any advice would be very appreciated. Please keep it simple..pretend I'm a 5 year old or something! Thanks!!!

I wish I had better news... but this is what I received from tech support at Overdrive...

Hello Jill,

Thank you for contacting OverDrive, and sorry for any confusion. At this
time, only MP3 Audiobook and EPUB eBook titles may be downloaded
directly to your device using the OverDrive Media Console app for mobile
devices. Direct download of WMA Audiobook and PDF eBook titles are not
supported using the OverDrive Media Console app for mobile devices due
to the operating system of your mobile device's inability to support
these DRM protected formats.

For more information on devices and compatibility, see our Device
Resource Center:

We apologize for the inconvenience. It is possible that other formats
may be supported in future updates. Please be sure to check out only
compatible formats (EPUB and MP3) and contact your library to ask them
to make more MP3 Audiobook and EPUB eBook titles available to you for
download.

Please don't hesitate to contact us if there is anything else that we
can do for you.

Thanks,
James

No problem, I was bummed when I received that response. I was hoping it was something I was overlooking... I'm pretty computer literate, but sometimes things slip past you, I was hoping this was the case, apparently I was wrong :-( Lets hope for an update soon!!! :-)
