Contrary to how it may appear, World Cup Soccer is not the only major sporting competition going on this summer. Therefore I have decided to post some highlights of the career of a very important tennis player who was born on this day.

Arthur Robert Ashe, Jr. (July 10, 1943 - February 6, 1993) was an American professional tennis player who won three Grand Slam Titles. He was also the first black player selected to be on the United States Davis Cup team and the only black man ever to win the singles title at Wimbledon, the US Open, and the Australian Open. He retired in 1980.

Ashe attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1963 on a partial tennis scholarship.
In 1963 Ashe became the first black player ever selected for the United States Davis Cup team. In 1965, Ashe won the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) singles title and contributed to UCLA's winning the team NCAA tennis championship. Because he was a member of the ROTC he was required to join active military service in exchange for tuition money. After a 1966 tournament, Ashe joined the United States Army, and after basic training was commissioned as a second lieutenant. He was assigned to the United States Military Academy at West Point where he worked as a data processor and headed the tennis program. He was promoted to 1st lieutenant in 1968 and was discharged from the Army in 1969.

In 1968, Ashe won the United States Amateur Championships and the US Open, and assisted in the victory of the U.S Davis Cup team. He is the only player to have won both of these amateur and open national championships in the same year. In January 1970, Ashe won his second Grand Slam singles title at the Australian Open, and in September of that year he turned professional. In 1972 he was denied a visa by the South African government, and was thus kept out of the South African Open. Ashe used this to publicize South Africa's apartheid policies: in the media.

Lucky Tip says:
In 1975, Ashe won Wimbledon, playing against Jimmy Connors. He also won the WCT Finals that year. Ashe continued playing until he experienced a heart attack which required surgery in 1979. He was planning to return to tennis, but repeated health problems led to his formally retiring from tennis in 1980. He continued to be busy in the tennis world, as a writer and commentator. He also continued to advocate for civil rights, actively protesting apartheid and other important issues. Ashe founded the National Junior Tennis League and served as the captain of the U.S. Davis Cup team. He was elected to the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1985.

In 1988 Ashe was discovered to be HIV positive; it is believed that he contracted the virus from blood transfusions. This information was kept quiet to protect his young daughter. To preempt an article in USA Today he went public with his status in 1992. He then began to work to raise awareness about AIDS. He later founded the Arthur Ashe Foundation for the Defeat of AIDS, and two months before his death he founded the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health to help address issues of inadequate health care delivery. As a result he was named Sportsman of the Year by Sports Illustrated magazine. Sportsman of the Year.

Ashe completed his memoir Days of Grace less than a week before his death on February 6, 1993, He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedomby President Bill Clinton in June 1993.

In 1997 the main stadium at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Park, where the US Open is played, was named Arthur Ashe Stadium in his honor. This is also the home of the annual Arthur Ashe Kids' Day.

@ Tip
Thank you so much for doing the start for us today including lots of artwork, and very interesting info too, I bet that there are some that are not aware that there are other sports apart from ... soccer, though as Robb mentioned there is only one game left now, what fascinating information you have found for us about Ashe.

Golf Accident

Two women were playing golf. One teed off and watched in horror as her ball headed directly toward a foursome of men playing the next hole.

The ball hit one of the men.

He immediately clasped his hands together at his groin, fell to the ground and proceeded to roll around in agony.

The woman rushed down to the man, and immediately began to apologize. 'Please allow me to help. I'm a Physical Therapist and I know I could relieve your pain if you'd allow me,' she told him.

'Nooo, no, I'll be all right. Just give me a few minutes,' the man gasped. He was in obvious agony, lying in the fetal position, still clasping his hands at his groin.

At her persistence, however, he finally allowed her to help.

She gently took his hands away and laid them to the side, loosened his pants and put her hands inside.

She administered tender and artful massage for several long moments and asked, 'How does that feel?'

He replied, 'It feels great, but I still think my thumb's broken.'

Two grandmas Marie & Edith were out driving in a large car, both could barely see over the dashboard.
As they were cruising along they came to an intersection.
The stoplight was red but they just went on through.
Edith in the passenger seat thought to herself "I must be losing it, I could have sworn we just went through a red light."

After a few more minutes they came to another intersection and the light was red again and again they went right though.
This time Edith was almost sure that the light had been red but was really concerned that she was losing it.
She was getting nervous and decided to pay very close attention to the road and the next intersection to see what was going on.

At the next intersection, sure enough, the light was definitely red and they went right through and she turned to the Marie and said, "Marie! Did you know we just ran through three red lights in a row! You could have killed us!"

Marie turned to her and said, "Oh, am I driving?"
