We have a new, free software update available for Kindle Paperwhite 2nd Generation that can be found here: http://www.amazon.com/kindlesoftwareupdates/paperwhite2ndgen

This update automatically downloads and installs on your Kindle Paperwhite 2nd Generation; however, you can also manually download the software and transfer the update to your device via USB cable.

The software update includes general improvements and the following feature enhancements:

* Access Notes from the Reading Menu: While reading, you can view all of your notes by tapping the "Menu" icon and then selecting "Notes." You can also continue to access Notes from the "Go To" menu in the reading toolbar. To learn more, go to: http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201306770#GUID-BF24CCAD-5285-484F-AE0B-6205844B24F2

* Manage Cloud Collections: See all of your collections in a "Collections" view, and customize where your collections show on your device. To learn more, go to: http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201455610

* PDF Improvements: Pan and zoom within PDF documents more quickly and easily, and customize the margins for an optimized reading experience.

* Cancel Full Book Purchase from within a Sample: While reading a book sample, you can view the price of the full book and purchase with one tap. You can also cancel the purchase before the download is complete by tapping "cancel purchase."

Where did you look? The background looks gray when the light is off. It's very white when the light is on.

No, but I'm guessing that since the demo models don't have a full operating system, that could be the cause.

If you think you would like one, I'd suggest buying one from Amazon, not from Staples or any other B&M store. That way, if you don't like it, you have 30 days to return it. If you buy it elsewhere, you are subject to their return policy.

I wonder if the one you saw in the store had the light turned down. My Paperwhite screen is whiter than any paper book's page. It's a simple matter to turn the light up and down and when it's turned way down the screen is sort of grayish. With the light about half way it's perfect.

Is this paperwhite a new model

It's the one released last fall. It's the second version of the PW.

Is there a software update for the Paperwhite first generation that allows you to manage cloud collections? I see there is an update for the 2nd generation, but I've been waiting for that update for the 1st generation. Thanks.

As of now, no, there isn't. Will there be one later on? No one knows. If I had to bet, based on past experience, I'd bet no.

B. Marks says:
That's kind of sad if they don't make them all work the same way.

I have 2 Paperwhite 2's and a Paperwhite 1. I really hate these changes in Cloud Collections but I have to live with it so I've changed the way I do things a bit. But now I have 2 separate ways of doing things, one for the Paperwhite 1 and one for the Paperwhite 2s. I wish they'd left them like they were but if they have to do this I wish they'd do it with all of them.

Apparently they have just made an update for the generation 1 available which include Cloud Collections - and the Goodreads link, among other things.

So I see, and they did it right after I posted my complaint. I'm impressed with their quick response and even more impressed with the power my complaints seem to have.

Mr. Obama, I think we need world peace...today! Thank you.

I don't see the Goodreads Icon on my toolbar - maybe that's something that's US only

Yes it is only for US.

Does anyone know when the new Paperwhite model with the 300ppi screen will debut?

we don't even know for sure if it even exists or if it's just a rumor

This is where I read about it. I suppose it could just be a rumor.

Until Amazon announces it, it is just a rumor. There have been some indications that something's coming, like the $20 off sale, but so far there has been nothing official.

Rumors like this are fairly common in tech. Some turn out to be true. Most don't.

I missed a sale?!

Curses.

I've been thinking about getting my oldest a PW for her upcoming birthday; she's an avid enough reader to get a lot out of it. A sale would have pushed me over the edge, if I'd seen it.

It seems unlikely that Amazon would release a new PW this soon, doesn't it? Have they ever gone less than a year between new ones?
