What do you want to do with it?

If you're just interested in reading, go with the Paperwhite. It's e-ink, so you can read outdoors a lot easier, and IMO e-ink is a lot easier on the eyes than a backlit screen, even indoors.

If you want games or video, you'll need to go with the Fire.

Same answer as the others that post the same question:

1. What is the PRIMARY reason you want the device?
2. Are you on a budget?
3. Who else will be using this device?
4. Do you want to use the device outside?
5. Are you in the United States?
6. Will it go with you when you travel, commute or work?
7. Do you have wifi in your home?

They are two different things. One is an eink ereader. The other is a tablet that you can also read on, but is not an ideal ereader. I have both a tablet and the Paperwhite.

I want to read but what about color photos from magazines? Being able to read anywhere is better then color photos. What do you think? I like versatility with things I spend alot of money on.

I have an iPad but want a more economic and compact e reader.

A lot of magazines are not available on the Eink Kindles. The ones that are they will be in grey scale instead of color. You will have to decide if you can live with this or not.

If you are primarily into reading I would go with the Paperwhite. It is cheaper, it is eink so can be read anywhere under any lighting conditions, battery last a lot longer before needing recharging, etc.

If you have an iPad then the Paperwhite would be best for you. You can read magazines on the iPad.

Okay. That answered my questions.

You want the Paperwhite. You already have an iPad. So you don't want to replicate it with a Fire.

You want the Paperwhite.

You can read color items with the Kindle app on your iPad. But you will LOVE eink!

Now you just have to choose between the wifi only or the 3G versions.

Enjoy :)

If you like playing games, watching movies, listening to music, playing games, running apps, and playing games, get a Fire.

If you like reading books, get a Kindle Paperwhite.

I have the old, 2nd generation Kindle, and a first generation Kindle Fire, and like them both. I am going on a trip to Europe and can't decide which would be better to take. If I take my Kindle, I can read outside, but if I take my Fire, I can use a translation app to help me communicate.

If you have an iPad do you really need another tablet? Because that's what the Fire is, a tablet. The Paperwhite is a dedicated eReader. It's sole purpose in life is to give you the BEST ebook reading experience possible. It's great for that! Full sun, blackness of night...doesn't matter, you can read with the Paperwhite anywhere. That's what it's for.

Any comments re. the difference between the kindle paperwhite with wifi vs. 3g version. I really have no idea what the 2 are?

In reply to an earlier post on Apr 8, 2014 5:55:10 PM PDT
R. Wilde says:
Wifi is a wireless network. You'll need to provide it with your internet connection, or get it someplace like Starbucks or McDonalds.

3G is a cell phone network, so you'll use that if there's no wifi available.

Anyone know whether e-books which say they are supported by kindle fire can also be read on paper white?

In reply to an earlier post on Jan 9, 2016 9:04:39 AM PST
MikeJW says:
Not unless the book's product page says that he Paperwhite is supported.
