'Updated' KK now bricked - how to reset?

My KK has been un-usable since the recent 'update'. Luckily I have a Fire, so have been able to access my books. But I much prefer the KK for reading. I kept hoping that when I went back to it, it will have recovered - but no luck.

Have lost track of the # of Hard Reboots and run down the battery I've tried to no avail. It will come up to the Home page, but any attempt to scroll down to a book or change page brings up the search box and symbols. I can't get to the menu, or I'd try to set to factory default. Is there any way to do this by connecting it to the computer? Or is it time to throw it in the trash?! : (

Sure wish amazon had left it alone!

You should never run down the battery. That will not solve anything.

Sounds like you should contact Customer Service -- click on Help at the top of this screen and look for the "contact us" button.

I doubt that it was the update. I have 3 KKs and they work just fine. I updated one of them manually myself and let the automatic update happen on the other two.

Have you talked to Customer Service? If not, you should try that before giving up on your KK completely.

Much like the Netflix problem that some have had on the Fire (mine works fine), problems from the update have not affected everyone. Just because YOURS updated fine doesn't mean the update wasn't the problem. It started updating (without any advance notice!) in the middle of a reading session and never worked again. Coincidence? Possible... Sure! It's possible I could win the Powerball too - but neither are likely!

When I have a block of time to allot to being aggravated, I'll try customer service, but I thought there might be some easy way to do a reset via the computer. Though I had wanted to AVOID doing a reset, I've pretty much reached the 'last resort' point. And certainly if the reset doesn't work I'd contact CS before trashing it, though I've read other posts where Amazon just told people to buy a new one! Hmmm... except last I looked they don't offer them any more. <sigh>

Are you sure you are rebooting correctly?
Hold the power button for a full 30 seconds, count them....then watch for the little boy under the tree.

ETA: Kindle Keyboard (3rd generation) are still being offered for sale. CS may give you a price break on a refurb if yours is not usable.

Ah yes ... NOW I recall why I previously resorted to letting the battery run totally down. It won't shut off. Holding the button causes it to first go to completely blank (white) screen and now it is black (though still says Linda's Kindle in white letters on the top). Now it's frozen and will go neither on nor off. As I haven't messed w/ it for awhile, I'd forgotten that this was what it did before when I had first tried the Hard Reboot. Once the battery died and I recharged I was first excited to see an ad come up (go figure! <g>) - holding the center button did bring me to the ad shown and Home brought me to the home page - but that's all it will do.

Off to see what refurbs are going for. Last I looked only the 3g model was available - but that was awhile ago.

The price of new 3G models dropped a few months ago -- they are $139 for new.
Depending on the features you use, you may want to look at the other options -- the Basic Kindle for $69 or the Paperwhite for $119 (wifi only).

Now would be a good time to call Customer Service because you will most likely get a rep who is in the States and will take care of you quickly.
