How do I turn OFF Cloud view?

I have heaps of books. I manage them in Collections, then DELETE them OFF my Kindle when I'm done. I have a plain old Paperwhite and bad eyes so this helps me keep myself organised.
The new update. Yuk. I have all my books back in my collections and unless I squint, it's hard to tell what's unread, and what's been read.
How do I get them NOT to show up. I rather resent the idea that I should have to see everything I own (1200+ books) on my kindle, and page thru endlessly, looking for my next read.
Can anyone help?

Sorry, and to add:
I have two young teens who have Kindles. I buy and send the age appropriate books. Their Kindles are registered under my account. NOW I've got their books/collections showing up on MY kindle, and they've obviously got access to gory murder mysteries and horror.
Seriously? Did NOONE at Amazon think this through?

First, you're not the only one who hates it. Second, the irony is that this is what Amazon thought people wanted when they said they wanted to be able to put books NOT on their Kindle into Collections. [sigh]

Anyway, up at the top of the home screen, when you're sorted by Collections, you should see: Cloud | Device.

Choose Device.

CBRetriever says:
Simple:

1. for their collections, press on the collection name until a menu comes up and select don't show on home page and voila, they're invisible
2. for your home page, make sure you have On Device highlighted and not Cloud, then you'll only see books that are currently downloaded on your kindle

Preachin' to the choir, sister. It's an organizing nightmare.

Here's a related thought, though. You're stuck cleaning up the mess on your PW, but what I did was switch my kids to separate accounts. I opened them each a free web mail address and an Amazon account. I controlled both, until my daughter turned 18, and I turned hers over to her. My son doesn't even know/care how his account works, yet.

I gift books to their email addresses, so that they keep their books, and my account just houses my books.

Just an idea.

Thanks for the tip regarding separate accounts, WhitePepper. I may have to do this. But what about the 50 or so books, they're slowly working their way thru.
And CBRetriever, I've tried On Device, appears to make no difference. The covers are still there, slightly greyed out.
And now I've a whole bunch of Collections with heart and winky symbols, thanks to the tween.
This turned my nicely organised Kindle I to 1206 books of nightmare. What were they thinking? Obviously little or no user testing by, ya know, ACTUAL USERS, was done.
And the Freetime thingy? Nice if you've got a newish Kindle -- and happily to let your kids have at it. Mine have old ones. That worked just fine -- oh wait, no, they're happily reading Val McDermid and Neil Gaiman now.
Idiotic update. /rant

Right. The greyed out ones are in your Cloud, and not on your device. That's the only differentiation; unfortunately, I don't think you can hide them completely.

Again, you're RIGHT, and you're not alone. The forum threads where, as you say, actual users were communally pulling out their hair have quieted somewhat, but oh, you're not alone!

P.S. The only Parental Controls I've ever used on the Kindle is to password protect purchases, since my son does let his friends play with his Fire, and I didn't want any surprise app purchases.

But I've never restricted what my kids could read. 1) Odd were/are (I have an adult child and a middle schooler) that they wouldn't WANT to read mom's Zombie Pirate Bodice Ripper Whatever books, but 2) If they did, we'd talk about what they read.

CBRetriever says:
the covers are still there within collections

make your Home page read as follows across the top:

Cloud | On Device (highlighted) | All Items | Collections

I don't have any greyed out covers on my Home - on Device page, but I did in some collections and i simply noted the name of the book, opened the collection and removed it from that collection

By Jove, that's it.

I just got the blanketyblank update a day or so ago, so I'm still tinkering with it, too. This appears to make the archived covers go'way. Whew.

Miss Carol says:
About removing the cloud books from collections (I'm getting information now for when I can get my PW) - do you have do download those books and delete them from that collection and then take them off your device again? Or can you do it with the greyed out covers? I know this is going to be an issue for me because I've just been removing them from my device for about 2 years now and not from the collections (that way they would just spring right back to where they belonged if I downloaded them again).

CBRetriever says:
no you don't - you can use the same menu that I pointed you towards to add/remove items from the Collection, but unfortunately, there are no ticks or light grey fonts here, so you have to rely on your memory as to what books you want to remove (there will be a check mark by a book, but that just means the book is in the collection)

In reply to an earlier post on Jun 3, 2014 7:42:46 AM PDT
I have accidentally re-downloaded books that I've already read, before. I open them, read a few lines, think "wait...", flip through a few pages, and then go, "Oh," and delete it.

No big deal.

For the love of Kindle I thought my HDX was broken. It's and UPDATE! It's awful. I want it gone.

In reply to an earlier post on Jun 3, 2014 8:10:47 AM PDT
Unfortunately, there's no going back.

That is not good news. I feel like I am always in the store shopping for books and no way to go home look at them and read them.

In reply to an earlier post on Jun 3, 2014 8:29:38 AM PDT
What changed on your HDX that you don't like?

I wanted to look at books that I own but they were not under books where they use to be. I could not find them unless I went to Amazon manage your device and look at the there.

In reply to an earlier post on Jun 3, 2014 8:36:55 AM PDT
Nothing changed in how your Fire shows your books. Tap Books, then select Device to see the ones that are downloaded to the Fire, select Cloud to see the ones in your Cloud/Archive.

In reply to an earlier post on Jun 3, 2014 8:41:28 AM PDT
Oh! Yeah, no. As Meya said, you may just not be looking in the right place. They're there. You may simply need to switch "views". At the worst, you may need to reboot the device, then sync.

The update didn't do anything to your books.

It actully says your "Your Library is empty"

You suggested rebooting so I did and that fixed it. Now the books are back and I am out of the store. It was just HDX burp on digesting the new update
