Free Books and Chat Book Discussion

Yay! The votes are in, and have been tabulated. In an overwhelming win, our book for the next book discussion is

Firefly Beach by Meira Pentermann
When Beth LaMonte rents a cottage on the coast of Maine, she wishes only to withdraw and paint. A mysterious ball of light disturbs her peace and leads her to a secret beach where she finds the diary of a girl who disappeared in 1975. Now Beth is on a mission, not only to bury her own past, but to put to rest the spirit of Firefly Beach.

Looking forward to our first book discussion of 2014!

New dawn... new day... new possibilities...

Thank you Oregon Dreamer for helping us to remember this..

Good morning Sandy, thanks for the start.

Four???

Posted on Nov 26, 2013 12:55:30 AM PST
I have been thinking about life and how some things work out and some things just never do..

Close your eyes and think back to when you were a child...
What did you want to be when you grew up?
Did you do it?

If you didn't, was there something that prevented it from happening?

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 26, 2013 12:57:52 AM PST
Sally, I usually use four posts for my open..
And when I start the first one I "save" the first four..
Kinda like LOB on links.. She always puts a book right under her open,
just in case she gets zapped.....

Sally in SA says:
Ah! Tricks of the trade.

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 26, 2013 1:09:30 AM PST
Sally in SA says:
I also loved that Sandy,

New dawn...new day...new possibilities.

If we could all shed past disappointments and or grudges and start each day afresh.

I think it is easier said than done and very few have that ability.

Thank you for getting us started today Sandy. I'm off to bed to get some sleep. I have PT early in the morning. I hope everyone has a good day. ;)

The Fight Before Christmas

Claire Simons is desperate to host a normal family Christmas. The trouble is, she just doesn't have a normal family.

After fifteen years of marriage, her husband Gregg walked out on her for Verity, an ambitious, young woman who wears startlingly short skirts.

When her daughter Sadie throws a classic pre-teen strop about not being able see her father on Christmas Day, Claire decides she may have to put the past behind her - and resolves they must all spend the day together as a family.

After blaming herself for months for stifling Gregg's free-spirit, and pushing him away, Claire decides she ready to face him and let go of her pain and anger.

But when Robert Carrington, a new manager at her work, comes to her rescue when Sadie goes missing, Claire starts to wonder if she's ready to let a new relationship into her life. Very soon, the guest list for Claire's Christmas is getting longer and longer - and more and more complicated.

Can she keep the peace for just one day? Will she discover that Christmas can be a time of new love and and new beginnings? Or will it all end in a huge Fight Before Christmas?

Sleep Well Wendy...
I hope that all of your hard work at PT will start to pay off soon..
See you when you get home..

Night LOB. Sleep well.

All this PT must be driving you to distraction. I do hope you are feeling the benefits so that you know it is all worth while.

Sally in SA says:
I don't know how you manage to read so many book Sandy. It boggles my mind!!

I'm lucky if I manage 1 a week.

I am so glad that I picked up "Firefly Beach" when it was free so that I can see what you all think during the book discussion in January. I am trying to be disciplined and not pick up all the books posted anymore. I have far too many to read in my lifetime! I also seem to be reading fewer books and more of this thread.

Sally in SA says:
@ Red,
Our local radios Tuesday's tongue twister for today:

Betty Botha bought a bit of butter but the bit of butter that Betty Botha bought was bitter so Betty Botha bought a bit of better butter to make the bitter butter better.

(Or something to that effect! I might have left out a few bits.)

Sally, It is a catch-22... Having out reading tie divided between the thread and books..
However I don't think of this as reading time.. it is social time..

All of the books on the list so far have been under 100 pages, one of them was only 7 pages
so reading that many really hasn't been that much...

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 26, 2013 1:49:28 AM PST
Sally in SA says:
Even so, that's a lot of reading.

I had the opportunity to do some serious reading this week-end as I spent most of it at home BUT after taking my oldest GS out for breakfast on Saturday morning after watching the younger one play cricket, I went home and morphed into a couch potato and watched television!

What a waste of reading time!

Posted on Nov 26, 2013 2:08:21 AM PST
Well, If I could get a new job that would really cut down on my reading time..

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 26, 2013 2:15:51 AM PST
Sally in SA says:
I don't think this is the right time to be looking for a job. I'm sure the new year will bring better opportunities. In the meantime, enjoy the time you have to read and do other things that you might not be able to do if you were working.

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 26, 2013 2:26:57 AM PST
But I've been out of work since June.. I really need to get back to it..

Posted on Nov 26, 2013 2:31:28 AM PST
Sally in SA says:
I feel for you Sandy. Unfortunately it seems that it is easier to get a job when you already have one. I'm sure that one will come up for you in the new year though. Did you not hear anything more from that "Open House" you went to? I think in this day it is sometimes not what you know but who you know that gets you a job.

Aren't you normally asleep at this time?

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 26, 2013 2:33:40 AM PST
I do believe that is right..
And I don't really know that many people..
My social life consists of this thread and my mom..

Rarely...My son and I are both night owls..
He is still up too.. I can hear the music from his room..

I think this is a great thread to "hang"
No connections with your "hat" ladies? (Forgotten what colour!)

You must be so missing your mom, specially with your Thanksgiving coming up and then Christmas. It's not a good time to be on you own. At least you have Chris and you and he appear to have a great relationship.
