We have a new, free software update available for Kindle Fire HD 2nd Generation and Kindle Fire HDX devices! This update automatically downloads and installs when connected wirelessly; however, you can also manually download the software and transfer the update to your device via USB cable.

The software update includes general improvements and the following feature enhancements:

* Find and share books with Goodreads -
Goodreads on Kindle lets you connect with the Goodreads community to follow friends and see what they are reading, and share and rate books on your Kindle Fire.

* Organize your content with Cloud Collections -
Organize your content library into collections like "Favorite Books" and "Sports Apps" that are synchronized with compatible Kindle devices and reading apps.

* Watch movies and TV shows on another device with Second Screen -
Fling movies and TV shows from your Kindle Fire to your 2013 Samsung Smart TV or PlayStation 3 using Second Screen.

* Learn more about books with Smart Lookup -
With the Smart Lookup feature, you can quickly look up words in the dictionary or Wikipedia or translate text in a book.

* Free up storage space with 1-Tap Archive -
With 1-Tap Archive, your Kindle Fire groups all content that has not been used recently so you can move it to the Cloud with just one tap.

To read about other improvements see this Help page:

Please feel free to share your thoughts or questions on this update.

@Matt - No, this update is for the Kindle Fire HD 2nd Generation and Kindle Fire HDX devices.

thanks for the response. This is will be my last fire anyway. Got a smart phone and the full google experience makes my kindle seem so blah, unless I want to play games.

Duodentes says:
Well, don't cheer too much. It's balky. It imports collection names and some entire collections, though mostly not, and is now refusing to add more than four books to at least one of my collections. I'll contact customer support tomorrow (though they were preposterously unprepared for the blue fringe thing), but I have to say the collections feature seems not only primitive but buggy.

Note to the people who indulged in ad hominem attacks in the thread I started on this subject earlier today: I'm an amazon lifer, but I'm disappointed to discover that they hire claques. Do they pay you in cash, credit, or product to cheer for them and attack people with legitimate complaints?

Posted on Nov 18, 2013 5:19:07 PM PST
L. Hill says: are too funny!!! Sad part is...they don't have to hire them...they attack for free!!! I understand your comment re - collections...I always thought the method developed for the e-ink models was "clunky" - and given the world of existing file/DB management out there, it could be done better. I expect the rush to get this out on the promised date has led to less than satisfactory trial and testing...I have always wondered why Amaon never adopted the bete test methodology many other dev's use. As a side...not to defend the "claques" - part of their point is valid...any complaint you bring here most likely won't reach Amzon dev teams...

Installed the update, now mirroring to my Samsung blu-ray player is broken. It establishes the link fine, and photos or other static content work, but video streaming just shows a bluish grey box. Audio works still as well. grrrrr

How can you tell if you have the Kindle Fire Hd 1 generation vs Kindle Fire HD 2nd generation?

Posted on Nov 18, 2013 9:06:20 PM PST
There has also been a nice update to the lock screen wallpapers, if you have turned off "special offers".

Posted on Nov 18, 2013 10:40:24 PM PST
R. Floyd says:
Even with special offers turned on, the lock screen now shows the date and time (the time is in a nice big font, perfect for those just waking up), battery percent remaining and, if you have mail configured, the number of new items in your inbox. Combine that with collections and you have a very nice upgrade.

R. Floyd says:
The easiest way is to look for the mini-HDMI port. If you have that, you have a first generation Kindle Fire. If you don't (i.e., you have only the headphone jack and the charging cable jack), you have a second generation Kindle Fire.

it would be nice if the second gen kindle fire which came out in 2012 with the hd would get updates atlest in performance and goodreads integration. Amazon itself said they want to be a companyq where the customers do not have to be on the upgrade wagon everytime a kindle comes out because they will update them. i dont see any updates for a device which is just about a year old Amazon please fix this

How do you set up collections in the cloud ...I see no option...what I mean is , I put ( example) all TV apps like AMC, FOX, etc and made a collection for them but unlike my kindle reader I do not see the collection....

Posted on Nov 19, 2013 12:54:36 AM PST
Apparently I have the first generation 8.9 HD, which is ridiculous considering its not even 11 months old. I see no reason why a "second generation" was even put right on the tail of the first and NOW as punishment for being a loyal customer who ran out and bought the 8.9 HD almost as soon as it was released, I can't have upgrades?! I'd there ANY reason at all why I shouldn't be able to make collections on my Kindle?!

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 19, 2013 1:21:08 AM PST
CBRetriever says:
the second generation came out almost exactly one year after the first generation and Amazon tends, like car manufacturers, to put out new models every year.

If you want Goodreads on your Fire, just download the app - Goodreads

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 19, 2013 6:55:50 AM PST
Go to "about" on your kindle where it gives you the version number. I have v8.9 so no update for me according to Ann above.

Deuce - To see Collections, swipe from the left and tap on Collections.

I agree with you. Its common android practice. Lets screw people. Put out a device then its outdated in 6 months. This will be my last kindle fire. full google devices get access to kindle features but not the other way around. Lame!

I've been waiting for the "automatic" download, do they do these in waves? I keep checking using the Update tab, but it's still telling me I'm up to date - no option to download 3.1.

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 19, 2013 9:33:49 AM PST
TensionExperiment - Yes, they roll them out in batches. It can take two or three weeks to get them. If you want the update right away, you need to manually update it.

The file is huge. It took about 15 minutes to download it and another 6 minutes to transfer it to my Fire. However, other than waiting, it was painless.

well that managed to be not even remotely helpful. I am well aware of how to use Goodreads, that's not the point. My Kindle was released Nov 20, 2012 so it is just barely a year old, yet it's too old for an update?!
And yes, to the idiot who deleted his post, I AM man bro.
