I've heard you can't access the Google Play store on Kindle Fire HD, but could I log into Google Play from the browser in the HD and at least listen to the music I've uploaded to it?

I'm getting frustrated with my Kindle Fire HD. If I wanted to be locked down so much, I would have gone with an Apple device.

There are ways to install apps from Google play by using a method called "sideloading". (you can google it for instructions) Not sure if you can ever access it directly on a Kindle Fire without rooting it (*which is not recommended*).

As for being "locked down" Amazon has not made a secret of the fact that the Fires run a heavily modified version of Android, and that it's primarily designed to be a Amazon media consumption device. If you want ultimate flexibility, buy a plain vanilla android tablet, not a Kindle Fire.

Yes, and so far no. You can still access many apps from getjar or 1mobile though - Google Play isn't the only (or even necessarily the best) store in town.

Because Amazon is being a turd about not allowing the google play store on if we choose.. here you go .. you can screw up your tablet if you don't know what you are doing or update it after following the directions

Unfortunately for me, the only App I want from Google is my internet providers WIFI App. They only offer it through Google Play. I have emailed them to ask that they make it available through another venue. I will report back if they reply favorably.

Hey Bezos, WTF. you want to become Microsoft? Better figure out a fix so that your Tablet does not go the way of the dodo.
When should we expect to see a posting on here from an Amazon development group stating they have fixed their "feature" and made our tablets Google compatible?

Really disappointing that you can't even get ITV player or any of the others apart from BBC iplayer

without rooting, using only my usb cord, a couple of websites (including 1mobile)and ES File Explorer i have installed, gmail, google play music, and youtube on my kindle fire HD. just look for **blah blah name**.apk file there are many ways around the google play appstore.

and as long as the same app is compatible, you can download the install from your android device using AirDroid and install it via USB onto your KFHD

So sad. Huge Amazon fan since 1996 but this is like locking all the doors to the mall from your store IN the mall.

Why should Amazon pay a licensing fee for each device while also selling you the Fire at cost?? Why do you think Amazon created their own appstore to begin with? A little research before buying anything will keep you from being surprised about what is available.

I was kinda bummed when I was reading the comments but I did a search in the Amazon store for some of the APPs I wanted to install on it! And I found them - so happy that I will not have to do webpages. I may not find all the ones I use on my Samsung Galaxy SIII but I am still happy with the Kindle Fire HD that I purchased!

Had a Samsung 2 tab and hated it! It's worth starting over on this fire HD.
