Have you tried holding the power switch for about 15-20 seconds and see what happens? Was the battery really low when last you checked?

Mine did this last week. I had just charged it. I plugged it back in. Not sure if that had any thing to do with it but I did it any way. I held the button for a good 20 seconds. Then waited, held it a second time for twenty seconds and it came up after a few seconds. Gave me a good scare, as well. Best Wishes.

Hi Kathryn, I ended up calling Amazon and they got it going.
Basically, you need to charge the kindle up
Disconnect from charger
Turn on Power source and hold for 20 seconds.
Give it a little time and then it should reboot.
If not, I would call amazon.

Hi Kimberly I am glad it worked for you. After several attempts, I contacted Amazon and they sent me a new Kindle the next day.
I am very impressed with their customer service.
Note: I too am very surprised how much I missed my Kindle during this time.

I just wanted to thank all of you for all the advice on this thread. My kindle started acting up and I about fainted. The bit of charge, unplug and hit the switch for 20 or so seconds worked like a charm. My heart started beating again and all is well in the world!

My Kindle was fully charged when I went to bed last night. Tonight I opened it to read and the screen was all gray. I plugged it in again, hoping to follow what most others did and neither the orange light, nor the green one came on so I went ahead and help the power switch on for 20 seconds. Nothing happened. Did it three times, nothing happened. Damn. Guess I'll have to call them.

I just tried the holding down the button for 20 secs and it worked for me. I love having my Kindle to read so I went into panic mode when it stopped working. Thanks for your advise.

Same thing happened to me this morning...the 20 seconds worked! Thank God! Finally have a day off of and was hoping to enjoy at least part of it with a good book:)

I had this problem awhile back, read about the 20 sec. hold and it worked great. The problem is that now I have to reboot my Kindle every few days. I can't figure out a cause, happens with the battery charged or half-way charged. Just a random, reoccurring, annoying thing now. Anybody else have this happening?
