I know that I am going to have to replace My Kindle Paperwhite
first generation I can't decide if I should do it now or wait and see if
they come out with a new one in October. If they come out with one
in October it could be a Birthday gift from my parents.

Unless your PW is broken, I would wait to see if there is a new model.

The battery Icon is saying that it needs charging but the light is green which means it
is charged. I just may have to charge it more often. Since i would like to wait if they come
out with a new one.

Jan, have you rebooted it? Unplug it, press and hold the power button for a full 30 seconds, then set it down and leave it be for 5 minutes.

Then plug it in to charge and see if the contradiction between the batter and the meter is fixed.

I believe Amazon has generally announced new models in August for release in September.

Try a reboot. Hold the power button for 30 seconds.

(You realize of course, that if you follow their advice and reboot the PW, it might be *fine*, and you won't need to replace it. Just sayin'. No new toy!)

I have tried a reboot and it didn't work.
I also contact customer Support and they had me
reboot it but it didn't work. My only options are to
either replace it,wait or get a certified refurbrished Kindle Paperwhite and send mine in.

A reboot? Or a Reset To Factory Defaults? Not the same thing.

In reply to an earlier post on Jul 17, 2014 5:45:55 PM PDT
So why not get the free replacement?

Jan Clark says:
There isn't a free replacement since it is out of Warranty.

Jan Clark says:
I have done a reboot and also a reset.
I know they are two different things.
Neither worked.

Personally I think the current Paperwhite is so good that there's not a lot they can do to improve it. If I was thinking of upgrading from an older Kindle I might wait a few weeks but if I needed to replace a broken Kindle I wouldn't hesitate to buy one now even knowing there might be a new one coming along in a while.

The current PaperWhite (PW2) is great. You can't really go wrong by getting one now. However, there may be a newer one (PW3) out in the fall. If that happens, the PW3 will have some upgrades you may find desirable enough to wait for. Whether that will be: a higher res screen, the rumored page turn buttons on the side bezel, audio capability, more font styles, more font sizes, or whatever, no one really knows. It never hurts to have a spare to read while one Kindle is charging, or being replaced after being damaged, or such, so it would not be outrageous to buy a PW2 now, and get a PW3 when they do become available.

If yours is still working, you might as well wait to see if a new model comes out this Fall unless you run into a great sale.

That was my situation with my PW1, but earlier this week Amazon had a one day sale on refurbished PW2s for $85. At that price, I went ahead and bought one but will probably still get a PW3 if it comes out this year and has the rumored features, especially the physical page-turn buttons.

I suppose a higher resolution screen would be nice but the current screen if very sharp and easy to read and I wonder if I'd be able to tell the difference.

Personally I don't want page turn buttons so that wouldn't improve anything for me.

I was happy when they dropped audio. That made the device lighter and kept the price from being higher and it's not a feature I ever used on my earlier Kindles.

I can think of two things that might be improvements:

1. If they have a screen that's flush with the bezel as in the Kobo Aura. I'm not 100% sure I'd like that but I think I will. I like it a lot in tablets. I recently ordered a Kobo Aura for use with epub books and I'm waiting on it to arrive. My Paperwhite will still be my main reader but I'm really curious about that screen and I've been wanting something another device for epubs anyway.

2. The real improvement I'd like to see in the next Paperwhite is an inflatable recliner that pops out so I can read more comfortably while on the go. I wouldn't want that to add weight or bulk, of course. :)
