Does Kindle DX come with WiFi

Prior to Christmas I was in the local Best Buy looking at the new Kindles and a salesman came up to talk to me. We started talking and I said the new Kindle's come with wifi, but the DX does not. He pointed to a Kindle box and said yes they do.

I was surprised. But when I look at the newest DX on Amazon I don't see a reference to wifi.

Does the latest Kindle DX come with wifi?

Thanks Meya. I just scrolled down on the Kindle DX page and saw the comparison between the different models, and it shows the DX does not have wifi. Wish I'd looked there before posting the question :)

Some people use "wireless" and "wifi" to mean the same thing. I would hope someone actually selling the products would know the difference but I'm not surprised.

It has 3G instead. Free 3G connectivity. Why would you need wi-fi when you have 3G? Works anywhere.

When the DX was originally released, no Kindle had wi-fi. The first Kindle to have wi-fi was the Kindle Keyboard.

Why no WiFi? Perhaps because they sell several different models, each of which have varying features depending on the market segment it's targeted for. All squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares.

I wouldn't buy it because the technology is 2009 and there have been subsequent models of Kindles with more and better options. i don't even think it's had a software update since late 2010.

Maybe because you've dredged up a really old thread?

Not quite true. If you want to download them wirelessly, you need wi-fi. However, you can sideload them via USB cable.

Because 3G may not work everywhere or may stop working in the future or stop being free... With WIFI I control connectivity.

That's a shame. But I'm not sure what devices DO "come with" wi-fi. Wi-fi is the signal provided by the user. I'm not sure who doesn't know that; the signal has to COME from some where. It's not generated by a device.

Now, 4G devices use cell phone signals, but you have to pay for data on them, just like a cell phone.

and there was a person the other day in Lithuania who couldn't connect to register his DX (Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia do not have 3G coverage and nor do certain parts of the US)

You don't have to pay for 3G/4G on a Kindle 3G.

3G on the Kindle einks are free.

4G on the Fires you have to pay for.

I said a Kindle 3G.

But you also said 3G/4G. The Kindle 3G, which I assume you mean to be the Kindle Keyboard, only comes with 3G.

A device "comes with wi-fi" in the sense that it has a wi-fi radio in order to connect to a wi-fi router. For example, the very first Kindle (from 2007) didn't have this... so it didn't "come with wi-fi". It was 3G only.

No, the wi-fi connection to the Internet is not built in, but the ability to connect to a wi-fi signal is. Not all portable devices are wi-fi capable (although these days, almost all new ones are and it's very rare to find a mobile device that isn't wi-fi capable).
