Kindle Warranty

Most folks here will think that extended warranties are a waste of money. You get 1 year with the Kindle, so buying Amazon's extended warranty is really only getting you 1 more year, not 2 more. Some Credit Cards will have a warranty for items purchased using them.

Every time someone tries to sell you an extended warranty, bank the money. You can easily self-insure your devices that way.

Buying extended warranties is always a waste, on average. Think about it, in order to make a profit, the company offering the warranty better be darn sure that there is a very high probability that the insured item will last longer than the coverage period, otherwise they will go out of business. And if they're wrong? They're out of business, so your warranty is no good anyway.

I got an extended warranty when I got my K2 and I'm glad. It's covered until the end of August 2011 and since I paid $300 for my Kindle I felt it was worth it. Because I actually prefer the size of the K2 I'd rather have a K2 replacement then get a new Kindle.

That said...at the cost of the new Kindle if I was getting one now I would not purchase the extended warranty.

It doesn't seem right, or fair, to me that the replacement doesn't come with a 1-year warranty! But that is, according to the Amazon rep I spoke with, the way it is! So, without the extra warranty, it could break every 13 months and not be covered and you would spend another $85.

I've been using Kindles since the K1 came out in 2007 and have upgraded to newer models within a fairly short period after each new release. The technology and features are still advancing so rapidly that I plan on an average useful life of no more than a couple of years, at most, not due to failure of the device itself but simply because I'll almost certainly want to upgrade to newer models within that time frame. So, to me, an extended warranty isn't worth it.

I currently have a 3rd generation KK 3G/WiFi and a 4th generation Kindle Basic, both of which are about a year old. I enjoy them both and use them daily. I also had a Fire but got rid of it because a found I really didn't need its extra features and didn't like reading on it. A few of the new features I anticipate over the next year or two for the regular e-ink Kindle are color e-ink (perhaps with video support), front-lighting, a better web browser, epub support, improved PDF support, etc. I'm fairly sure I'll want to upgrade again as these and other features become available.

My replacement didn't really last for more than 6 months, because I hadn't used it for about a month-and-a-half, except to keep it charged up. I love(d) my Kindle and, even though Amazon is known for their customer service, I think the quality issue is a serious one and leaves a lot to be desired!

F Crist - It's industry standard that a warranty starts and ends based on the original purchase date - not any replacements. Why should a Kindle be any different?

If, as and when, I buy a product I don't expect it to last forever, but a good, quality product usually far outlasts it's warranty(e.g. dishwashers, TV's, clothes washers & dryers, most computers, etc.). Based on my past experiences, with many different products, the Kindle is not that much of a quality product. I do love it and all the features (I have talked many people, looking for an e-reader, into buying the Kindle), but I'm not sure that I will continue to do so!

On the other hand, I have 3 first edition Kindles that have had no problems (other that simple battery replacements) and are still going strong.

I believe the warranty on refurbs is three months when purchased outright. When a refurb is a warranty replacement, the warranty is three months or the remainder of the original warranty, whichever is longer.

I have the Square Trade Warranty for my KF, and it comes with "accident" coverage. While Amazon CS is fabulous, I am not sure they would replace your kindle if you dropped it or accidentally broke the screen. For the $44.00, it's worth it to me...

If you have a 1 year warranty on parts and service for your car, and you get a new alternator, the warranty runs still out at the end of the year (based on the purchase date). It doesn't give you an extra year from the date you got the new alternator!

I always find it interesting that people complain about the Kindle's quality, then insist that they're not doing anything to cause any problems. Some of us have had our Kindles for YEARS without any problems. While you may not be doing anything to cause the problems, you could also be doing something that you're not aware that you're doing.

If you want an extended warranty, you need to buy one. I bought a 3 year warranty for my KK from Square Trade for less than $30. A lot of people think extended warranties aren't worth the money, but it makes me feel more comfortable to have one.

I don't quite understand what I could have done to cause any problems (I didn't throw it around or drop it). My replacement Kindle lasted 8 months and I barely used it for the last 3 months (I've been reading a lot of paper books). To use up 2 Kindles in 17 months (technically) I don't feel speaks a lot to quality. I really do love my Kindle, but it doesn't seem right that 2 of them would fail in that short a period of time!

F Crist - You say you don't understand what you could have done to cause the problems. What did the Kindles fail for? Maybe we can point out possible causes and you can go from there? As you can tell, many have their Kindles a number of years with no issues.

The second after approximately 3 months of almost no use ( it has been sitting on my desk doing nothing - I have been reading quite a few paper books and all I have done to the Kindle was recharge it. Then I wanted to use it and I couldn't turn it on and it appeared as if the lower right of the page had been torn off! So, I have had 2 Kindles in 18 months! I am not a happy camper.

If the screen is damaged ("lower right of the page had been torn off") this usually means that something applied pressure to that spot. Since the damage was just in one corner, that isn't usually the result of torque but the result of pressure. It doesn't take a lot of pressure but it does take some pressure.

Just to give you some idea - my cat (about 6 lb) walked across my Kindle while sitting on the coffee table without damaging anything. Not something I recommend but cats will do things they are not supposed to do. It could be that you picked up the Kindle for some reason and your thumb put too much pressure in one spot. It could be that you placed another book or something on top of the Kindle without realizing it.

As to the one that just quit for no apparent reason, that could have been an update that went wrong. All Kindles update their firmware automatically. Any electronic device that is updating the firmware can have a bad install and usually you don't recover from that. The Touch had an update last fall that caused a number of devices to fail which Amazon replaced with no issue.

You may not be happy, but remember that thousands of us have had Kindles with the eink screen for years without problems.
