╰♥.☆.♥╮ TODAY IT IS:

╰♥.☆.♥╮ - Slinky Day
The humble Slinky was invented in the 1940′s by Navy engineer and inventor, Richard James. It proved an immediate hit, and selling out in just a few hours, quickly became one of our favourite toys. Slinky Day celebrates the humble Slinky, and should be spent doing slinky tricks, watching Slinkies race down staircases, or simply untangling the things as they inevitably knot, twist and spiral!

╰♥.☆.♥╮ - Franchise Appreciation Day
Franchises allow entrepreneurial and business-minded individuals to set up and run their own business with all of the support and buying power of an established brand. Franchise Appreciation Day celebrates the franchise business model, and encourages you to shop with your local franchises!

╰♥.☆.♥╮ - Toasted Marshmallow Day
Most people have fond memories of childhood, sat by a roaring campfire toasting marshmallows on wooden sticks... Yum! Toasted Marshmallow Day is a chance to re-live those memories, and for people who've never experienced toasting marshmallows to find out what all the fuss is about.

╰♥.☆.♥╮ - International Whale Shark Day
The bunnies have got Easter sewn up and Christmas is all about Rudolph, so it's only fair that everyone's favourite fish, the whale shark, gets a bite at the cherry.

Started in 2012, International Whale Shark Day celebrates these gentle giants. Growing up to 14 metres long and 12 tons heavy, whale sharks have a face only a mother could love: no whale shark will ever win a beauty contest, so it's right they're made to feel special one day a year. However, there's a serious purpose to the day, which aims to raise awareness of how this animal has been hunted to vulnerability for its highly prized fins and meat.

So, why not show a little solidarity on International Whale Shark Day and celebrate our finned friends? Go coastal and try and glimpse a whale or perhaps bake a (fish)cake. Whatever you do, just don't watch Jaws.

╰♥.☆.♥╮ - Holistic Pet Day
Holistic medicine has grown in popularity over recent years but many people will not have considered it in terms of treating their pets. Holistic Pet day was set up to try and bring more publicity to the idea that holistic treatments, where a pet's lifestyle, diet and environment are fully considered, are more beneficial. Using holistic treatments is said to improve nutrition, increase your pet's energy and even cure some chronic conditions.

Holistic Pet Day was started by Coleen Paige from the Animal Miracle Foundation to encourage owners to look at all issues that could impact on the welfare of their pet. There are no set celebrations to commemorate the day although it is used as an annual opportunity to promote holistic treatments with press articles and support from many animal organisations.

A man asked an American Indian what was his wife's name.

He replied, "She is called Five Horses".

The man said, "That's an unusual name for a wife. What does it mean?"

The Old Indian answered,"It is an old Indian name. It means ...."

Oh wow a day off - so pleased for you and a Red Hat lunch too, long time since you have mentioned that will you go with your mother ?
Perhaps you should try to get some sleep in before the lunch and it may well help with all your aches and pains - sending positive vibes ♥

Thought of you when I posted the Xmas freebee :-)

In reply to an earlier post on Aug 30, 2014 2:50:09 AM PDT
You just have to 1-click those freebees when they are free...
And you can't have too many Christmas books ....
Although I think I have enough of them to read for several years...
That was fun last year..

I have been wondering about who it is that tracks the thread and why - I think that I would understand better if it was a thread that only had posts once in a while, (I do get emails from Shelfari if anyone does post on some of the threads there, which is not often) but why track FB&C, which is a thread that will hopefully have lots of posts in a day ?
When I am home and my pc is fired up I have FB&C as a pinned tab and just refresh the page to find the new posts. I would have thought that one's inbox would get awfully full during a busy day here.

Good afternoon, red, and good morning, Sandy!

I'll be MIA most of the day with chores, then guests and football. Hope everyone has a great day. I guess I will have to set my slinky out, along with my stuffed elephant and red-and-white pom poms.

I am so not strong, according to today's quotation . . . but I have already lost an inch from my waist and I haven't even gotten to most of the dietary advice from NOT FREE YOU: On A Diet Revised Edition: The Owner's Manual for Waist Management. So far, I've just made a few, tiny little changes and learned how my body responds to what it's fed. I cannot recommend this book highly enough, so far, but the real test will be whether I get back to the size I used to be and stay there easily. I'll keep you posted, unless no one cares.

In reply to an earlier post on Aug 30, 2014 3:12:44 AM PDT
red, I only track it if I am hosting it so I can see if someone posts afterward when it may not appear in the little box on the page of recently visited threads. Otherwise, it's too easy to find to bother with.

Every day of the year is a celebration of something or other. I vote that we each create a Day (or two).

First, I want a "Knick-Knacks Day". This is to celebrate those of us who have little animal figurines, mid-century modern vases, sea shell collections, and I don't mind if refrigerator magnets are included. Whether you're into Harmony Kingdom, Artesanias Rinconada or local flea market kitchen witches, here's to you!

Second, I want a "New Budget Day". Creating new budgets - which won't be followed, but it's the principle of the thing - is a rite that ought to be commemorated.

@ Plays
Well you certainly have lots lined up for you today - hoping it all goes well and the right team wins.
Going to have to go and take a look see with that book, especially since you say it is not about dieting, been there and done that LOL Though I would have thought that with all your bending and lifting and cleaning in the stalls would already have whittled your waistline.
Let us know how your day pans out

Gray Ghost (A Bill Dix Detective Novel Book 1) by C.L. Swinney

Book 1 in the Bill Dix Detective Series. The 3rd book coming this fall.

While on a fly fishing vacation to Andros Island in the Bahamas, narcotics detectives Dix and Petersen discover their fishing guides were killed when a sudden blast of gunfire fractured their speedboat, Gray Ghost. Local gossip has it that Gray Ghost went to the ocean floor with a hundred million dollars' worth of cocaine in the hull.

Dix and Petersen, against their better judgment, are drawn into helping their island friends even though it could cost them their careers. Leads are chased down in the Bahamas and Miami. The two detectives identify a diabolical plot of a sinister man known only as "The Caller."

An elaborate trap is set for The Caller, but he's two steps ahead of the detectives. As the drama unfolds, it's unclear who can be trusted. When it appears The Caller will get away once again, lead detective Dix and his sidekick Petersen exhaust everything they have in an effort to capture the criminal mastermind.

NOT FREE ** Book 2 in the Bill Dix Detective Series is Collectors. ** NOT FREE

Off-duty detective sergeants Bill Dix and Steve Petersen find themselves in the middle of a jaw dropping firefight... in broad daylight...on their way to watch a baseball game. The two can't believe their luck as this is the second vacation they've taken together that's turned out horribly wrong.

There's plenty of finger pointing and speculation regarding their involvement in a complex investigation including drugs and gun smuggling for terrorist cells...all within the United States. Dix wants to head back to Florida, while Petersen seems to have struck up a relationship interest trying to rebound from an ugly divorce. Whatever it is they've stumbled upon, dead bodies are showing up and Dix gets the sense no one is telling the truth.

Dix and Petersen join forces with the locals and try to save one man from being hunted down and work frantically to figure out who's hunting him and why. Good, evil, and everything in between plague the detectives throughout the case. Who ends up surviving? And, when Dix crosses paths with the mastermind, do either of them live long enough to talk about it?

Second edition. Re-published August 28, 2014

Hi Red, thanks for the start! I track the thread if I am hosting, because as Plays says I can see if someone adds something later that I feel I should respond to. Also, it helps me keep up with the posts if I am at work, as I will try to take 5 minutes and use my iPad to scan the emails and swipe to delete. That way I can have a general idea of how busy the thread is and what people are talking about. Then I read more in depth later. Maybe some people check in quickly like that, also?

Sandy I agree, having too many Christmas books is not a possibility. And for the freebies I delete them if they end up not being to my taste. Of course, I also love the movies (It's a Wonderful Life, a Charlie Brown Christmas.....).

New Diane, what a wonderful idea. I would like an International Procrastination Day-- why do today what you can put off until tomorrow? Maybe they already have one, or maybe they just kept putting it off. I am sure I will come up with some other days. Then again, maybe I will think about it tomorrow.....

In reply to an earlier post on Aug 30, 2014 5:53:13 AM PDT
redandwhite, I don't have kitchen witches or sea shells, but I have lots of carved animals in stone, wood, metal, glass and ceramic. Some I bought, some were gifts from family and friends, and I think some sneaked in because the ones I already had were hanging out welcome mats!

Hi Tip
Just had to look that up ..... and yes you are in luck, not just a day but a whole week is devoted to Procrastination - but you and I missed it (or put it off) here is what I found ;-)

National Procrastination Week
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
National Procrastination Week is a national holiday devoted to procrastination and putting-off important tasks.[1] It is an annual event that takes place during the first two weeks of March, but, in spirit of the holiday, the specific dates change annually.

If Only I Could Talk: A Canine Adventure by Tony Lewis

Trapped in a house fire, Nelson is dying.
If only he could open the door ...

Nelson whimpers his final goodbye to Rascal, his canine soulmate, their paws almost touching through the heavy glass that separates them. Succumbing to the smoke, his life drifts slowly before him ...

Nelson was born deep in the French Alps, where his only worries were how snow could be both soft and hard and why it made the house sink. And whose turn it was to fetch the baguettes from the boulangerie.

So how could puppy love be so cruel? And how ever did he find himself lost and lonely in England?

His dogged wanderings eventually led him to David and his son Timothy, a young boy with autism. Life was once again full of joy.

Until now, trapped in the fire, Nelson's luck has surely deserted him. But he can't die yet! He has an amazing tale to tell - and an amazing tail to tell it with. And with Rascal there to help, Nelson has no choice but to survive.
