I have a Kindle Fire and most of the app I get from the FAOTD work fine on it. But now I'm looking to buy a smartphone and I know some of them are notorious for Amazon Apps not working well or at all on them. I also know some phones almost never have problems with Amazon's FAOTD or other apps.

Please let me know what phone you think is a poor choice or a good choice for being able to purchase apps from Amazon. If you own one that is great or terrible regarding apps, I'd like to get your advise.
Thanks in advance.

Let's see, avoid Windows phones, iPhones, Blackberries, basically any phone that doesn't run the Android operating system.

Sorry, I should have been clearer. I am DEFINITELY LOOKING FOR AN ANDROID PHONE and preferably one I could use without a contract, on a monthly prepaid plan.

I have heard that quite a few apps do not work with the LG Optimus.

Well, that's going to limit your choice of phones since not all are available on pre-paid plans. It might be better for you to look and see what phones are available given your constraints and then ask if people have had experience with those specific phones. Otherwise we're going to be giving you advice on phones you're not going to be able to get and we'll be wasting both our time and your time.

The Samsung Exhibit II 4G Prepaid Android Phone (T-Mobile) is available without a contract through T-Mobile. I have a (contract) Exhibit II that I got directly from T-Mobile when I upgraded my phone, and all of the apps I've downloaded from Amazon's app store work just fine, as do all of the ones from Google play. I haven't had the phone long, but I'm pleased with it so far. It's considered a midrange phone, so it's not wildly expensive, but also not the cheapest.
