I finally called Mayday after spending a couple of hours attempting to use a PS3 for mirroring to the TV. They informed me that for the PS3 to work, I had to have a miracast dongle on the TV. I was puzzled how this enabled the PS3 to work. The techie finally admitted that with the dingle on the tv, we didn't actually need the PS3. .

Did you try using second screen?? That is what is supposed to be supported by the PS3. The mirroring feature makes no mention of a PS3.
Here are the instructions:

Second Screen
Requirements

Kindle Fire HD (2nd Generation) or Kindle Fire HDX
PlayStation 3 or a 2013 Samsung Smart TV
Eligible content

Movies and TV shows purchased, streamed, or downloaded from Amazon Instant Video
Second Screen allows you to send playback of movies and TV shows from your Kindle Fire to your TV or media streaming device, while freeing up your Kindle Fire to do other tasks while you watch.

With Second Screen, you don't have to worry about interrupting the movie or TV show on your TV if you want to do something else on your Kindle Fire. Your TV will act as the primary screen, while your Kindle Fire will act as a remote for playback controls, a customized display for X-Ray so you can learn more about the movie or TV show you're watching, or another way to quickly browse the web, view your e-mail, and more.

Whenever you're viewing a movie or TV show on your Kindle Fire, simply tap the Second Screen icon to send it to your TV or media streaming device.

Note: If you don't see your TV or other device when you tap the Second Screen icon, make sure that your TV or other device is supported for Second Screen playback, that you're signed into the Amazon Instant Video application with the same e-mail address and password you use on Amazon.com, and that the Amazon Instant Video application is open.

We asked the tech for assistance flinging video from the HDX to the PS3. He told us to buy a dongle for the TV. Aren't mirroring and second screen synonymous? I suppose it doesn't matter as the HDX can do neither of them in conjunction with the PS3.

Read the instructions that I posted. You can use the PlayStation 3. And no they are not synonymous. I am sorry you got bad information from the tech. Just like any company you have good and bad employees.

I spent 2 hours and the PS3 could not discover the HDX and the HDX could not discover the PS3. The techie took control and went through the same steps with the same result. I don't think it can be done.
Have you ever actually seen an HDX and PS3 work together?

Yes, I saw a video demonstration of it. Make sure the PS3 is on and that you are signed into your Amazon Instant Video app on the PS3. Also make sure that app is open on the PS3.

Are your PS3 and Kindle Fire connected to same WiFi network as well?? Just trying to help find the problem for you.

The difference between second screen and mirroring is that all you are doing with second screen is sending the video from the app on your Fire to the Playstations app. With mirroring you see what is on your Fire screen on the TV. For this you need a smart TV that is Miracast enabled or a dongle.

Looks like I have to delete my post and apologize to the CEO of Amazon. I am now able to free up the HDX while the PS3 take over playing the video. Thanks for your help. This is the first time I have seen any directions on how to actually get second screen to work. Thanks again.

This is pointless for the most part since you can stream either though.... way to lose, Kindle!
