This one really startled me. I was just about to read the NY Times Latest News when my Kindle went bonkers. I do know enough to let it do its thing in case it is updating, but they so seldom come automatically for me, so it was a shock. All it says in the download section is "includes optimizations for your Kindle's performance, including fixes for Wi-Fi connectivity."

A similar thing happened to me this afteroon. I just started to read one of my books and my Kindle Paperwhite went bonkers. Turned on and off repeatedly, updated again and again. Now several hours later, the Kindle automatically wakes itself when I am not even touching it. I hope this gets fixed.

Yes, mine automatically updated when I turned off Airplane Mode this evening. That was unusual as I've always had to manually download updates in the past.

So far, though, I can't see what the update has done that needed doing. The fonts are all still way too small (small is microscopic on the Paperwhite, and I have to keep mine on the 3rd largest size regardless of font used). And we still have to go into settings to turn Airplane mode off and on.

As far as "airplane mode" goes, don't get your hopes up about them fixing it.
"it's a feature, not a bug!"

Font size is in the eye of the beholder. They offer 8 sizes, mine is on the second to smallest.

Mine updated when I was reading it as well. I turned away for few minutes to answer a question and a flicker caught my eye, it was the screen change to tell me it was downloading update.

I am not sure what minor tweaks it made either. It still leaves a faded text if I open a menu on the current page. Like if I check a word definition or translate a phrase, the book that was outside of the box area becomes fainter for some reason.

does it now support Japanese? We're getting closer to the shipping date of the paperwhite on amazon.jp (January 5)

CB - Well I just went into my settings to look under default language. It appears to have Japanese as the last selection. Under keyboards you can select Japanese.

CBRetriever says:
that may have been part of the update - the unannounced one on the newer Kindle Fires added it as well

Still hoping Amazon will add Airplane Mode (wifi on/off toggle) to main menu instead of buried in the settings menu

Oh, I LIKE Airplane mode. But not the fact that they now make us go into settings to turn it on. It's ridiculous to make us take extra steps now when they never have before.

Three taps of the screen to turn airplane made off/on is not a problem for most people.

in my Kindle Touch when i swiped my finger up or down, i could surf in chapters, but Paperwhite lacks this feature.
i wish there was an update to restore that ability. Does anyone know where to post our suggestions for upcoming updates?

CBRetriever says:
I think that was disabled because of too many complaints about skipping forward or backward too far accidentally

The Go To menu will allow you to go backwards and forwards by chapter

anyway, you can email them here: kindle-feedback@amazon.com

I was also surprised by the update in the last week. Apparently it improves Wi-Fi connections and prevents jail breaking. Since I had no problem with the Wi-Fi and don't jail break, it didn't do anything for me. :)

I have no idea when my paperwhite did the update but in the device info it says 5.3.1. The last number was a zero last time I looked.

My paperwhite is nice, and I like it But once in a while it reboots itself after the 5.3.1 update.
