no, it can't be deleted. It's a feature.

Is that right, Old Rocker? Because dictionaries can be deleted from e-ink kindles by going to the MYK page. Can they not be deleted from a Fire using the same method?

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 22, 2012 9:00:12 PM PST
I tried deleting it from the Fire screen, and it won't allow me to do so. I'll look at MYK.

I don't see anything under MYK. Doesn't mean it's not the there, I suppose.

No, you can't delete them from a Fire at all. You can delete them from MYK, but they'll just come back. And it won't do any good anyway since you can't get them off of your device.

ETA - They're probably bigger than an average book, but they can't take up that much space.

"They're probably bigger than an average book, but they can't take up that much space."

Just a bit! 20MB, and there's a warning on the kindle page that it's so large it might take longer to download. Give or take, that's the size of about 40-50 average books.

Well, it comes already downloaded (pre-installed) on the Fire. And out of 16GB, that's not taking up much space at all. In fact, it's come downloaded already on all of my Kindles. I've never had to download it.

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 22, 2012 11:26:42 PM PST
No, I'm not saying it's ever had to be downloaded. But checking the detail page was the easiest way to find out exactly how big it is.

I agree that it's not huge in the overall scheme of things, but if you don't ever use it (and some people don't), I can imagine it would be a bit irritating to have it taking up space that could otherwise be used for a LOT more books.

i am just sick of the thing popping up whenever i accidentally touch a word or spacespace

Two Oxford Dictionaries (American and English) were pre-installed on my Kindle Fire HD and they seem quite cumberbersome to use. If there's a way to go straight to a word instead of scrolling, I haven't found it. There was also a Spanish and a Chinese (or Japanese?) dictionary which I was able to delete.

I was appalled to read the comments in the Shared Notes and Highlights at the end of these dictionaries. The American one in particular is being used as a social networking site which does not make very pleasant reading. It also looks as if it being used by perverts for grooming purposes. If we have to have the dictionaries then Amazon should remove this function. I would certainly have thought twice about buying the Kindle Fire had I known this facility was on there.

You can turn off those shared notes and highlights, you know

We're all just other customers, here. If you have a concern, you might want to contact Amazon directly and let them know.

And furthermore, Wikipedia is much easier to use if you need to look up a word.

I assume you are opening the dictionary to look for a word. Try doing a search while you are in the dictionary.

G. Harris says:
It can be done, to an extent. Go to 'Manage Your Kindle' (on the main Amazon website), then click on 'Books'. Then, simply find the dictionary entry, click on the 'Actions' button on the right hand side of the screen and then select 'Delete form library'. All you need to do now is confirm that you want to delete it and sync your Kindle.

Just done this on my Fire HD and although I cannot seem to get rid of the Oxford English Dictionary, I managed to get rid of the American one.

Yeah but even if you delete the dictionaries from MYK you sync the device and the dictionaries will still be there. This holds true for the kindle keyboard. Not sure about the other versions.

Yeah, unfortunately. I noticed that myself a few weeks ago. Thankfully they don't take up much room though, but it would be nice if we could at least hide them...

I contacted Amazon support via Mayday, about deleting the spanish dictionary from my HDX, and for anyone with the new HDX, IT CANNOT BE DELETED. Has something to with 'xray'

Why would you need to? Just leave it alone, and it will fall to the bottom of your virtual stack. You won't even know it's there.
