Another Amazon blunder: there seems no way to turn off auto-rotate. Think this isn't important? Try reading while lying on your side!

Yes there is, pull up the menu and select "lock" and it locks the fire in either vertical or horizontal. Then select "unlock" if you want the auto rotate back on.

While lying there on your side, try reading the manual.

Robert, give Best Buy a call. They'll help you understand the Fire for only $59. Seriously, we don't need a post every time you get confused and decide to lash out instead of checking the manual for actual information.

Thank you asking this. I know mean people get mad, but I wanted to know the same thing and you saved me from reading the manual. I want to read trashy romance novels not kindle manuals! LOL

Manual? What's that?
Nospin...thanks for the tip!

Azure - The User Guide is in your Docs tab.

People read those things? Huh. Who knew?

Thanks. This was really helpful.
I never thought the lock option had anything to do with rotation.

@Robert: And what is that way? My non-Amazon devices are all different.

Really? This guy posted a "problem" with locking/unlocking rotation of the KF and SIX MONTHS LATER checked for the solution???

Manufacturers frequently adopt slightly different instructions, labels, etc. for a device to avoid the numerous lawsuits regarding patent infringements that afflict the entire industry. I'm simply amazed that you would not have tried the effect of the "lock/unlock" selection over a period of six months, that you would not have looked at the user manual for the KF stored in your Docs section, or that you wouldn't have come across this common question posted on thread after thread.

My wife encountered this problem the first time she tried to read in bed. Assuming that Amazon would have realized that would be a problem for almost anyone trying to use the KF, I simply looked for a setting that would lock the orientation. Took about 30 seconds.

The fact that this is a "common question" points to poor UI design on Amazon's part, IMHO. This easily shows that a "lock/unlock" switch is not self-explanatory; makes much more sense to put a "rotate/no rotate" switch under "Display", to give users a clue where to look.

I'm sure Amazon will take your recommendations under serious advisement.

Thanks, this was helpful for me too. I'd seen the "lock/unlock" feature, but ignored it -- I had assumed it had something to do with password protection for the Kindle. It's not at all obvious that this has to do with auto-rotate.

I was having the same problem and was thinking it would be in display. I was annoyed when I could not find that function. "lock" I figure was for locking the screen for protection. Kinda like the option to lock your computer. How the eph am I supposed to think that it was meant for the auto-rotation. It say "lock" and nothing more. I could look at the manual and look at virtual-page after virtual-page. It only took me a second to type up "auto-rotation Kindle" and I got me an answer. Thank you, Robert U. for asking. Screws to all the other trolls.

I've had my KF for about a week.
I don't read manuals as a rule, because exploring the device is half the fun of owning it.
Since I am very much a "hmm, what does THIS button do....?" type of personality, it took me this long to search the question.
Finding the answer within 30 seconds, I'm glad I did.
Thanks to Nospin for the info.

sincerely,
Unspun1

Thanks! That was a real bother trying to read in bed. I tried settings first, saw the "locked" and assumed it put it in some kind of sleep mode.

Manual---that's one of those things in the trash with the box and wrapper and stuff, right?
