I am wanting to get my son a Kindle for Christmas. I had thought about just getting him the $69 Kindle but after looking in to the paperwhite it might be a better option. I have the Kindle touch and the kindle keyboard. I like them both. My fear with the paperwhite is I know my eyes are very sensitive to reading lighted screens. So the light built in to the screen worries me a little. But on the other hand I like the idea of not needing a separate light. Please share your thoughts so I can figure out what to get my son. Thanks!!

How adverse are you to his reading under the covers until the wee hours? ;0)

My son is 9, and has the Basic. He'd probably love the PW. Either would be a great gift!

He is a night owl and tends to keep his brother up with his light while reading. We have tried to not let him read and he just lays awake.....so it would not bother me if I caught him under the covers with a book. At least that way he wouldn't be bothering anyone else :) Just cant decide if I should spend the extra....

The Paperwhite is an eInk screen with a light that shines on it not through it. It's not like the lighted screen on your phone or computer. It's like having a book light on your Kindle Touch or Kindle Keyboard.

The screen of the Paperwhite is not lighted like a computer screen. It's like your Basic with an LED lamp shining on it but minus the reflections.

Looking at it online you can't tell that. It is really hard to see how a light looks on a screen on a picture. Thank you! I want one for me then :)

I found the picture that shows where the lights are at in the paperwhite.....That looks awesome. Wish I would have waited to upgrade to the touch now :/

Give your son your Touch and get the Paperwhite for yourself.

Staples and Not-So-Best Buy has them on display. It's not a perfect situation because the lights in the stores are so bright, but you could get a feel for them. I realize it is just my personal preference, but I didn't like the black of the PW. I'm so used to the graphite color around my KK.

But then I'm a grandma set in my ways - not a nine-year old :)

I LIKE this idea!! Sammielee, you could get the boy a cool new cover for the Touch, and load it up with cool kid books and maybe even a few e-ink compatible games, and say, "The Touch is YOURS, now!"

And get you a PW for yourself! Hah! It's a beautiful plan!

I just ordered the Fire 2 for my 7 & 9 yo daughters, to replace the Nook Color I got them last Christmas.

Did something bad happen to the Nooks?

I thought about giving him my touch but there is a tiny crack in the screen.....have no idea where it came from. When I got it I didn't get the amazon case I just got a case to slip it in and I won't make that mistake again. So i don't really want to give him mine. The crack does not get in the way with reading because it's so small but still....if I like his I might get myself a paper white after Christmas :) and then my touch can be for my younger kids to share.... Until they are old enough to get there own. I also have a kindle keyboard that my husband uses now ....I bought the amazon case for it and it has been wonderful.

So I ordered my son a paper white, an amazon case, and screen cover. It will be protected....even though I know my son will take good care of it. He wants one so bad and loves reading. Now just need to get him an amazon gift card so he can get some books after he opens it on Christmas :)

@sammielee: super nice Mom

check out the dozens of e-ink games. i was recently in the hospital, and i had plenty of content - so i didnt have to worry about any random possible loss of an expensive device

I personally got my nine year old the Fire HD for x-mas....I figure that way, I can con her into reading books so she can then play games...and, when we go on trips, it will play movies.

But, I may be a little crazy...That is her only xmas gift though.
