Hello Ron Kolt,

I am sorry you are having difficulty seeing your text files on your Kindle Fire. PDF (.PDF), TXT (.TXT), and MOBI (.MOBI) are supported natively on the Kindle Fire and should not require conversion through the Kindle Personal Document Service.

Here are some things to make sure of when you are trying to view your .TXT files on the Kindle Fire.

1. Make sure you have side-loaded (transferred via USB cable) the .TXT file directly to the documents folder on your Kindle Fire.

2. Once you have successfully downloaded the .TXT to the 'Documents' folder on your Kindle Fire, you should be able to view the document from the Kindle Fire's Home screen by tapping 'Docs' content library.

I am also providing you a link here for more detailed information and instructions for Downloading, Streaming, and Transferring Files to Kindle Fire.

If you are still unable to view the .TXT file after successfully following the previous steps, please contact Amazon Kindle Customer Support for personalized service.

You can also give us a call at:

U.S. and Canada: 1-866-216-1072
Kindle Support: 1-866-321-8851

Best Regards,

I've been having the same problem. The work around so far is to open .txt files with the quickoffice app on the kindle. Its not a really good solution though since it doesn't save your place so for large books in .txt format its not really a good solution

I have the same problem. Made a post about it earlier but seems to have disappeared. I can email TXT files to the Fire and they show up in docs as a converted format in the folder AND they show up in the interface. But if transferring from PC via USB to either books or docs, they DO NOT appear in the interface.

Has anyone contacted amazon about this yet? I'm about to try to see if this is a known issue with the Kindle Fires or if I just doing something wrong.

I'm having trouble opening .txt files on my kindle fire HD. Everytime I try to open one, it tries to open it as a webpage and gives me "this webpage cannot be displayed". Is there some way to open it through the office suite or something?

i found that you have to get rid of any folder structures and just place the text file directly in to the documents folder with no sub folders
