can you register a new kindle if you don't have wireless

If you have a serial number, you can manually register but it is easier just to go to a hotspot (library, McDonald's, etc) and use their wireless.

If you want to manually register, go to Manage Your Kindle page - top right hand corner, hold your mouse over Your Account - part way down you will find Manage Your Kindle - then on the left - click on Manage Your Devices

It's only easier to go to a hotspot if it's close enough for that person and they have a way to get there. Me thinks you assume way to much.

Vjvl51 is correct you can do it without wifi.

However, not all of the features will be activated until you have connected to wifi at least once.

Yes, what Amazon's instructions don't make clear is that there are two stages to registering. The first stage is registering your kindle's serial number on your amazon account. That can be done manually via the PC, or directly from the kindle if you have a wifi connection open. But the second stage is what some have called "associating" your kindle with your account - I like to think of it as Amazon sending data to the kindle that resets the kindle's own info (like the kindle name, and the account password, and so on). That step can ONLY be done by wifi, so you need to connect by wifi at least once to make the kindle fully functional.

Without that second step, you can still buy and read books, you can download and transfer them via USB, but you can't sort them into collections, and you can't rename your kindle.

If, of course, you attempt to do the first via wifi, then the second follows on automatically at the same time. It's only if you try to do it manually that you'll come up against the difficulty.
