The only time I have been able to access the camera is when an app I downloaded gave me the option to take a picture or retrieve from gallery for my profile picture. I am lost as well....

The camera was designed for video chatting via Skype it was not designed to take photos.

It can done with a app that accesses the camera though but it will be hard to aim and take photos with a forward facing camera.

The Blade says:
Actually, what the product description page says is, "Free Skype video calls with front-facing HD camera" and that is exactly right. If you feel misled it is because you failed to read or understand what Amazon had to say about the device. It is not because of anything Amazon did. The Fire HD has a camera & it does what Amazon says it will.

If you want your money back, you can return the device within 30 days of purchase. They tell you that, too.

Did you read the product page that said the camera was for Skype?

Kindle Fire HD 7", Dolby Audio, Dual-Band Wi-Fi, 16 GB - Includes Special Offers (Previous Generation - 2nd)

"Free Skype video calls with front-facing HD camera"
"Free Skype HD Video Calls
Get face-to-face with friends, family, and over 250 million Skype users around the world. Kindle Fire HD includes the Skype app pre-installed and features a front-facing video camera for free high-definition video calls at home or abroad."

No where else in the product description does it talk about using the camera for ANYTHING other than Skype. It sounds like you may have mislead yourself by not reading.

I figured out Skype, my problem was I didn't have any contacts saved, I was dialing numbers that didn't have Skype active.

In order to get around the camera block, I downloaded Pic Say Pro. It was I believe $3.99, but well worth it. I already had the app download previous on my phone so I already knew how to use it. The app has a lot of different edits and it takes great pictures. I highly recommend it.

Why the hell have a camera on the Fire HD if you can't take pictures with it. Who came up with that one?

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 4, 2012 4:12:26 PM PST
Because it's for Skype. And, you *can* take pictures with it, but that's not it's primary function.

Does no one own a digital camera anymore? Sheesh...
