In New Zealand Amazon offers only one model of the Kindle, the most basic. Having read lots of reviews, what I really want is a Kindle Fire HD, even if I can't download movies from Amazon. I want an e-book with a good browser, email client and some apps, and at about half the price of an iPad without 3G.
I can't get it through Amazon, for whatever reason, but I can get it from a 3rd party here in New Zealand. Has anybody out there had experience of using a KF HD purchased in this manner (ie. without the blessing of Amazon)? What are the pitfalls (beyond the obvious one of no movie sales from Amazon)?

You may have trouble getting customer support, for one thing.

From the Fire's (2nd Generation and HD) Support pages:

Kindle Fire Restrictions for International Customers:

At this time, we are only able to ship Kindle Fire 2nd Generation and Kindle Fire HD from http://Amazon.com to customers with a U.S. billing and shipping address.

Note that international customers are not able to purchase some types of content on Kindle Fire 2nd Generation and Kindle Fire HD and not all functionality is available for international customers. You must be physically located within the United States to purchase, stream, or initiate a download from Amazon Instant Video. Music purchases from http://Amazon.com are only available to U.S. customers.

Also, from the App Store for Android: Amazon Appstore is available to customers located in the United States, France, Italy, Germany, Spain and United Kingdom.
*You need to be a resident of and have a valid credit card and billing address in those other countries/regions to use their websites. Your Country Settings must also be set to match your country's credit card and billing address.

Actually Amazon offers three kindle models in NZ - the Basic, the Touch and the Keyboard. (Click the link for "live outside the US? Go to this page", then scroll down, looking at the LHS of the screen, and you'll see "also available: Kindle Touch and Kindle Keyboard" with links.)

But you'd do better asking that question (or reading the previous posts, because it's been discussed before) over on the Aussie/NZ thread here:
http://www.amazon.com/forum/kindle/ref=cm_cd_et_up_redir?_encoding=UTF8&cdForum=Fx1D7SY3BVSESG&cdPage=199&cdThread=TxMDK6TJ7BBDRT&newContentID=MxQVXWBH8N47WR&newContentNum=4955#MxILOO551XW4HY

You can't really expect many Americans to know what the situation is in NZ, but the locals might.
