I have tried clearing data and cache from applications, and then checking my device and I am not gaining any more internal storage. I also have rebooted, I was able to use the menu icon on the bottom of device to clear all downloads, but can't remember how to get back there. So I do it manually, to no avail. I have 5.12GB of 5.37GB available. What am I misunderstanding here? Also, i am new to the kindle fire world. So please excuse me if this is a stupid question. Help..thanks to any input. I am learning as I go.

Hmm... you know how in Windows even when you uninstall a program there's stuff left behind, because the uninstaller doesn't necessarily know all the data your program might store all over your computer (temporary files etc) while you use it? Probably something similar is going on here.

If you hook up the Fire via usb cable, or use a file browser app like ES file explorer, you may find stuff that is not really needed but is left behind that you can delete. You might have stuff in the Download folder for example. But deleting stuff when you don't know what it is can be dangerous, so it might be helpful to copy everything you plan on deleting over to your computer first!

I did just that and I went from 0 MB to 224.01MB of 5.37 GB.....not a great help....what is using all of this storage...I keep only a minimal amount on the device.

The Fire is saving every single page I have ever visited in the history even the pages were closed. I had to delete over 100 pages from it this morning.

ETA: I had to delete them page by page. I didn't find a way to so a mass delete on history.

Apps like Pulse and USA Today and even the Amazon MP3 Cloud Player eat up quite a bit of storage. When you clear the data and cache, sometimes it has to grab a minimum amount of space for the app just to get going, too. You don't get all that space back.

If you get less than about 250MB of space left, it starts complaining about LOW STORAGE, too.

My take is, I have to stop thinking about this thing like it was a real PC. Stream everything and don't keep content on the device unless you must be away from wifi and then take just what you need. Use the free space to let the apps crud themselves up over time. They probably have some kind of limit as to how much stuff they will collect over time, I would imagine. More than we'd like, I'm sure!

Take a look at how much storage each app is using based upon hitting the gear, and then more, and then apps. You will find that when you clear the cache, just a few K sometimes are freed. When you clear all the data, maybe 20-50 Meg is freed, only to be taken up by the couple of meg the app needs just to keep running.

I am confused. Apps have dedicated memory.

Much of the confusion comes from thinking Kindles run something that resembles windows or iOS.
Linux use of memory is 100% different from either.

Many apps list one memory figure in the store, and then they download many megabytes on top of that. A foreign language app, for instance.

If you are concerned about orphaned fragments, download ES File Manager and delete whatever you don't like.

That means you have a lot of your storage available. You have 5.12 gb available. That is a lot of space that is still available.

Here's what I just did to my Original Fire. Using ES File Explorer, I found a folder marker '...venezia...' that had several gigs of cached files. Each of the 139 files that I tried was 8.2MB and wouldn't open. I dumped the folder and have half my data storage free now. So far, I haven't found anything that doesn't work because I ripped out its backbone.
