why did my archives disappear?

The archive is simply a list of books owned by the account that are NOT on the Kindle. All that is really gone is the list, not the actual books.

You may have rebooted your Kindle, in which case you need to turn on wireless and sync to the Amazon servers.

You may have inadvertently deregistered your Kindle. If that's the case you need to reregister it.

If FoundQuilting's solution doesn't work, wait for a while (a few hours, a day) and try synching again. Amazon's server which stores your account's information may not be communicating with your Kindle correctly, from a problem on their end.

I have seen several forum posts today on the subject of "disappearing" archives... it may be a coincidence, it may not.
