Fire HD or Paperwhite!!

I am in a fix over this.
I am a first time kindle buyer and a avid book reader.
I ordered paperwhite few weeks back and was happy about it. Recently while discussing with my friends, they convinced me to go for Fire HD rather than Paperwhite but what i am worried about is the book reading experience on Fire HD.
Can anyone let me know how is the experience compared to a K4 or a paperwhite?
Should i go for HD if my primary motive behind purchasing kindle is reading books (bare in mind, i also intend to read some technical stuff)
How is the experience on HD? is it apt for long hour reading?? Fire HD users answers are appreciated!!

No, if reading books is your primary use for the device, the Paperwhite is the one you want. The Kindle Fire is a tablet that can do a lot more stuff like stream movies and browse the web. Reading on it is ok, but not as nice as the Paperwhite.

(I have a Paperwhite and an original Fire)

you'll have a problem with the HD if you want to read it outdoors as there' can be a bit of a glare/washout of the screen

@Denise : Great!! i think that sums it up for me.. because i do not want to lose out on the reading experience.. That would defeat the whole purpose i am taking it for!!

Hmm..yes have read about it..although it says reduced glare but its still there..I intend to use it more in journeys and for night reading...i used to stay away from kindle for its lack of back lighting...Paperwhite seemed perfect to me.. but Fire kind of lured me but i was skeptical of the reading experience and don't want to lose out on purpose!!

I agree with Denise. The PW is a superior reading experience.

I own both the PW and the Fire HD. I use the first for reading and the second for everything else. You can read on the Fire HD, but it's harder on your eyes and your hands/wrists, and you tend to get distracted from reading by everything else you can do on the tablet. I tend to only use the Fire for cookbooks and children's books; I got it primarly for streaming videos.

I generally agree with the other posters, but since one of your goals is reading technical books, you should know the Paperwhite does not do well with graphics. If you have access to a PC when reading and needing to examine a graphic, that could solve the issue. Other than that, I am 100% in agreement with the others -- I far prefer reading on my Paperwhite to reading on any other device.

Both!

OH wait, just for reading, then the PW is what you want. I have both and I love both (scratch that, I had both but someone stole my Fire this past weekend), anyway I use the PW to read and light web surfing. I only surf the web on it when my fire is too far away. I use my fire (still not used to referring to it in past tense) to watch movies, music, and surf the web but not for reading. The only time I would consider using the fire for reading is for magazines cause I like color pictures. The PW is easy on the eyes and has a great battery life. I like not having to worry about it running out of battery power every other day or so (the fire has a great battery life too, but not weeks worth).

Well!! i ordered Fire HD at last..cancelled my paperwhite order. actually the 3-4 week waiting time created this indecision...I m a student and have a 4S but never owned a tablet.. So after ordering paperwhite, i read many reviews of Fire HD.. decided to wait for iPad mini.. then order KFHD since iPad mini is way 2 expensive...
Paperwhite..maybe next year..but i was tempted for a tablet and so i succumbed to KFHD!!

Personally I only read on an e-ink Kindle. I also have a tablet that I use for everything else.

I think the experience of reading on e-ink is unmatched.. i had uprfront ordered paperwhite but the 4 week waiting thing turned out to be killer!! since i did not had a tablet i was tempted and finally decided to move to KFHD!!

You may well find the KFHD to be an excellent reading device (unless you're at the proverbial "beach.") The improvements in screen pixel density and reduced glare improve its readability significantly. You might want to try an app I use, ScreenDim, that enables you to control brightness and contrast independently. I find that it comes close to an e-ink display. (But I'm not as affected by back lighting as some people.)

Thanks a lot for the advice!! Will give it a shot as soon as i have my KFHD in hand!!
Well..i dont think reading should be much of an issue for me on KFHD since i already spend 8-10 hrs everyday behind laptop or pc!! Yes i wanted something that would further not strain my eyes and give me an easy feeling and that was the first reason why i had ordered PW.. But i think should be fine with KFHD!!

Thank you all so much. I have the same question as the original post, and you have all helped me decide that the PW is for me.

So can you receive and send e mail on a Paperwhite?

Thanks for the responses everyone, this helped me decide on the Paperwhite for my wife's Christmas gift--she's a reader and doesn't use the other stuff so much away from her phone.

Nice thread. I am an avid iPad 3 user, but have been looking at the Kindle PW as a reading device for books and newspapers. I will still use my iPad for my magazines, because I like reading them in color. I have asked for a PW for Christmas, so fingers crossed, hopefully I will be getting one soon. This thread just enforced for me the reason I want one...as strictly a reading device!
