I don't have a DX, I have a K2, but it have you tried holding the power switch?
You slide it like when you do for turning on/off, but instead of letting it slide back, you hold it for a looong time (20-30 seconds). That should make the Kindle restart.
If that still doesn't work, try pressing the Home button for some 5-10 seconds. In the K2 this makes the Kindle go into recovery mode. After that, you press letter R from the keyboard and it should get the Kindle to restart.

Good luck, let us know how it works!

I came to the forum this morning for this very reason. My Kindle1 froze on a page. I tried to go to the home screen, but it didn't react. I thought, "Reboot," and turned it off. But it stayed on the page. Then I turned it over and removed the battery. Still, the page remained unchanged (how does the thing work without a battery)? I replaced the battery and then returned the power switch to the "on" position and the Kindle1 rebooted. No problems since, but I'm left concerned that trouble looms. Others?

While I find that my K1 froze more frequently than my K2, the incidents were still few and far between. When it did happen, though, I took the battery off and did the paperclip restart, and it would solve the problem. I think, though, that most of my freezing issues happened before the last K1 update. It really hasn't happened again in a loooong time.

Same thing for me. I plugged my Kindle in to the computer to charge, got a message stating if I wanted to read while it was charging, to disconnect from my computer. Well, I didnt want to read at that time, so I left it plugged in. A few hours later, when I did unplug it, all I could get were the authors' pictures. I e mailed Amazon, but haven't heard back yet. I will try the re-booting thing as soon as I get home.

Thank you! I tried holding the on-off button, but it didn't work. However, holding the home button for 5-10 seconds did!

I have a Kindle 3rd generation 3G...I used the 3g and forgot to turn off the wireless. Wne I tried to reuse it was froze on the sebpage. I plugged it in th charge and when it went GREEN it was still frozen. I held the on/off swith for twenty seconds and the screen went blank. I held the Home button for 15 seconds and pushed R but it is still blank...what can I do to get this thing unfrozen?

C. S., hold the power button for a full count of 30 seconds. Then be patient. Within 1-2 minutes it should restart. Try again if it doesn't.

Thank you....It did take several minutes but it is back now..I guess I thought it would come back instantly...I have learned my lesson about leaving on the 3G!

@ C.S.

Leaving the Wireless on was not at fault. I have left 3G on countless times without a freeze. And maybe once have I come back and found it "frozen". It happens. Just like a Windows PC occasionally needs rebooting.

Are you using a hinged cover, most particularly the NONlighted hinged leather cover that Amazon made and sold for $35? And no longer sells because of all the problems with freezing, rebooting, battery drain, and/or losing place in book...

I never read about that method before. I'd be really cautious about using it. Sometimes people repeat things that worked on K1 but cause problems on K2 and later. It also suggests that you are messing around at a level of the OS behind the GUI interface that is not meant to be used by ordinary users.

I am not sure what you mean by 'hinge'...the one I have is leather with lether corner supports on the right edge and elastic on the left. It has a magnetic clasp...and it does not have any printing inside or out...

I had read some posts regarding unfreezing the 2nd gen but decided to ask this question specific to the 3rd..holding the power button worked...after a couple of minutes it was unfroze...

Shirley...I've never seen the "hold home and press R" before either. I've never had a K1 though.

My DX Graphite froze a couple of days ago for the first time ever, and I've had it since the release date last summer. After I wasted a few minutes dithering around in a panic, I held the switch that I usually just slide and release for about a half minute. Nothing happened, but I put the DX down on a table, went to get a drink, and when I came back the DX had gone to a different screen and I guess it was rebooting. When it finished, it showed only that there were XXX books in the archives, but I hit the 'home' button and suddenly all my books were back. Only problem was that it had lost my place on the book I was reading. When it froze, it was stuck on a screen saver pic and just wouldn't wake up when I did the slide/release thing.

I liked knowing with my K1 I could take the back off, insert paper clip, and that always worked. Now, I'm not sure what to try if what I did this time didn't work. Maybe I'll get lucky and it'll not happen again.

In reply to an earlier post on Jan 31, 2011 9:41:28 AM PST
Claudia...holding the power button to the right for 30 seconds and allowing your DX to reboot is basically the same thing as using the paperclip on your K1.

If the buttons are working, it's best to restart by clicking Menu/Settings/Menu again/Restart.

My Kindle 1 froze several times and I discovered a small reset button on the back so I didn't have to take the battery out. It is not exactly a button, more of a small hole, like the reset on a wireless mouse. It has been reset many times and just keeps on working. It will soon be 3 years old and I recently passed it on to my daughter-in-law so I could enjoy the new Kindle 3.

Thanks, Meya - the problem was, my DXG was totally frozen . . . no buttons working, nothing. I tried everything I could think of, and thought I was going to have to come here and start asking for help right before holding that power button long enough did the trick.

After more than 6 months with totally no problems, it came as a shock when it froze up like that!

I'll be sure to try your menu/etc. if it happens again, if I can get anything to work!

Boo1233: Mine froze the other day and I thought I was holding the button enough, but for real. Hold the power button for THIRTY seconds. Let go. Then power it on. It will turn on. If not, send it back, but it probably will. Good reminder? Like laptops, phones, etc, it's a good idea to occasionally reboot for 'cleansing.'
