Will the Kindle Fire HD charging cable and connection "points" to the actual device be the same as all the past Kindles???

Kindle Fire HD 8.9", Dolby Audio, Dual-Band Wi-Fi, 16 GB

The charging cable is different - the Fire HD does not come with a charger, just a USB cable. The physical connections are the same, plus an HDMI port and Bluetooth.

So that means I can use my Kindle Dx charging cables on the new Kindle Fire HD ($499.00 device) that i have ordered?

In reply to an earlier post on Sep 12, 2012 9:48:38 AM PDT
Yes, although it will charge slowly.

The following is copied from the FAQ on the Kindle Help Forum for the new Fires and Paperwhite:

We recommend against using other USB 2.0 (micro-B connector) charging cables as they may or may not work and run the risk of damaging your device. The Kindle PowerFast charging accessory will charge the Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD faster than charging from USB.

Does anyone else find it ridiculous that a charger is not included in the price? I feel like canceling my order out of sheer annoyance.

I have the Kindle Touch and the AC adapter had a flaw in it, they sent me a new adapter where I could use the USB cable and plug into an AC adapter. I have just purchased the FIRE, can I use that same adapter to charge with the AC or will I have to purchase a new AC adapter for the FIRE??

tel,

The adapter you have should work without a problem. The critical issue is the power supplied by the A/C wall charger. Ideally you want a 5V/1.8A charger. If the charger doesn't supply that much power, it will charge more slowly. There is no danger of harming your device despite Amazon's (no doubt "legal department's) warning to the contrary.

Does this mean the BEST way to charge the Fire is via the USB adapter through the computer?? Also, when downloading books with the Touch they go straight to the touch, when I add the Fire to my Amazon account does that mean the downloads will go to BOTH, or maybe it gives me a choice which one?? Just want to make sure I know what I'm doing when my Fire arrives!

I appreciate the information, but according to Amazon and Meya:

We recommend against using other USB 2.0 (micro-B connector) charging cables as they may or may not work and run the risk of damaging your device. The Kindle PowerFast charging accessory will charge the Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD faster than charging from USB.

Wouldn't that go against the spirit of their agreement?

Yep, I DO! Why nobody else agrees with us is beyond me.

NYCMag,

I have a VERY strong suspicion that the language from Amazon you quoted comes straight from the Amazon legal department. The notion that "runs the risk of damaging your device" might make sense if the charger "pushes" a charge to the device but it doesn't. The device "draws" the power it needs from the charger. There is nothing special or proprietary about the KFHD's charging circuit or battery that requires some "special" charger. And if there were, why would Amazon so cavalierly tell you to plug the supplied usb cable into any source other than wall chargers that compete directly with the FastCharger?

The wall chargers for my cell phone, my wife's cell phone, my daughter's cell phone, my first gen Kindle Fire, my iPad 2, my first gen Kindle Fire and the wall charger I have that was included in a set of accessories that include a mobile charger all work just fine. So will the charger Amazon sells below.

And that brings up a related issue. How is one supposed to charge a KFHD in a vehicle? The answer, of course, is that one uses a standard charger with an accessory adapter for what used to be called the "cigarette lighter."

In short, the notion that there is some magic in the FastCharger is ridiculous.

This brings to mind all of the complaints we use to see from Kindle buyers outside of North America who had to buy their own wall charger. It is now our turn to "feel the pain". One can only imagine the angst that Apple users are feeling now that their collection of adapters and cords will not work (without another adapter) on the newer devices.

Ah well, its just like the multiple notebook power supplies sitting in the closet ... "just in case" ... and each one is slightly different.

Time moves on ... anybody need an IBM PCjr keyboard? It was my grandson's "first computer" .. just the keyboard, nothing else. made him happy for a while. .. now he has a Kindle keyboard, Kindle Fire, iPod, 2 bass guitars and a bass fiddle.

I would rather pay $9.99-$19.99 for the Powerfast charger than wait 13 hours for it to charge via USB, not to mention the waste of leaving the computer on all that time so the Fire can charge. I mean really, what's another $20? Many people spend that on lunch and coffee over a day or two.

Agreed. I have a kindle, a kindle fire and bought a fire HD for my wife for Christmas and was shocked that the AC adapter was not included. Amazon is quick to push the Kindle over the IPAD but this put me over the top. The IPAD is a better deal.

Amazon tried to keep the price down. The Fire can be charged through your PC with the included usb cable.

Oh come now--be serious! A charger for a kindle fire costs $20, tops. You're saying an iPad, which costs twice as much as a Kindle, is a better deal than the Kindle because the charger is included? Come on, do some math!

The kindle fire ac adapter fits the kindle fire hd. Will there be a problem for the new unit?

Dianne,

As long as you trust your first gen KF combo wall charger/cable, it works fine to charge the KFHD. However, there have been numerous cases of problems with that particular component. Be sure it is well ventilated and that it does not overheat.

More annoying is the conflicting advice.

Purchase the branded "Quick Charger" or a generic USB-mains charger (all purchased from Amazon UK).

If amazon just included all items necessary to charge and operate the device we would all be saving a lot of time and energy and no one would be ticked off.....once again the corporate world does not understand the person.
